Last April, about 20 Rotarians installed water-filtration systems in the remote villages of Honduras, thanks in part to a $120,000 partnership grant given to the Swampscott Rotary Club and its counterpart in La Ceiba, Honduras. We drove through the modern, low-rise city of La Ceiba, which, despite its banks and restaurants and grid-patterned streets, looked bleached and weathered, as though it were still trying to assert itself against nature. The impact of humans on the north coast accelerated considerably after 1502, culminating in today's cultural peak, which comes complete with Dunkin' Donuts and KFC. I began Semana Santa by travelling to La Ceiba, a city on the northern coast of Honduras to visit some friends living there. There's a saying in Honduras that states: "Tegucigalpa thinks, San Pedro Sula works and La Ceiba celebrates." With the easy-going attitude of the locals, at least the ones I met, it was easy to believe such a saying ... Besides eating fish, and lots of it, while in La Ceiba, I took a trip to the community of Sambo Creek to take a small boat to an island a few miles off... (East Tennessean, TN)
