Bird flu mystery deepens as Hungary rejects link Feb 14, 2007
The mystery over the origin of Britain's avian flu outbreak deepened today when the Government claimed that the strain of the disease found in Suffolk was "essentially identical" to recent cases in Hungary, but Hungarian officials denied any connection. Since the outbreak at a Bernard Matthews turkey farm near Holton, in Suffolk, on February 3, public health officials have been closely scrutinising the movement of poultry products to and from the plant and two facilities used by the company in... Diplomatic row over raw meat shipped from Matthews plant to Continent Feb 13, 2007
Six lorryloads of turkey meat sent to Hungary last week from the Bernard Matthews plant at the centre of the avian flu outbreak were raw and may have returned the H5N1 virus to Central Europe. The revelation immediately sparked a political and diplomatic row between London and Budapest. (Yahoo News -- Bird Flu)
Q&A: Hungary and the UK bird flu outbreak Feb 13, 2007
What are the questions that the Government is trying to answer now. The Government is still trying to find out how the lethal avian flu strain H5N1 arrived at the Bernard Matthews plant in Holton, Suffolk, and how turkey chicks on the adjoining farm became infected 160,000 birds were gassed last week. Britain is powerless to stop turkey imports Feb 12, 2007
Bart Dalla Mura, the firm's commercial director, said Saga Foods, the company's Hungarian subsidiary, sent meat to Britain from third-party suppliers all over Hungary, including an abattoir and processing plant in -Kecskemet in the south owned by Galfood ... Mr Dalla Mura said: "Bernard Matthews can confirm that it uses the certified and regulated site in Kecskemet owned by Galfood. "Our information is that Galfood in Kecskemet is a turkey abattoir and processing site, and it does not slaughter... (Telegraph.co.uk)
'Once again farmers are going to suffer from an imported disease' Feb 11, 2007
And yet, just hours later, it emerged that partly processed turkeys had arrived at Holton - either directly, or via Saga's plant in Sarvar - from the Gall Food abattoir in Kecskemet, just 30 miles from the infected Hungarian farms. Mr Bradshaw confirmed yesterday: "They [Bernard Matthews] acknowledged that they had imported birds from Kecskemet on Friday. We and the Hungarians are investigating all the supply chain to Sarvar, and most importantly to Kecskemet. Our inquiries are centred there... (Telegraph.co.uk)
Scandal over bird flu imports Feb 11, 2007
THE government allowed Bernard Matthews to continue importing turkey meat from a bird flu-hit region of Hungary even though it suspected the area was the source of the British outbreak. A consignment of 20 tons of turkey was imported last Tuesday from a slaughterhouse in Hungary, three days after avian flu was confirmed at the Bernard Matthews plant in Suffolk. (Times Online)
Scandal shames our poultry industry Feb 11, 2007
The suspected consignment of raw meat did not go directly from the large plant in Sarvar to the UK; the birds concerned appear to have been taken for killing to an abattoir in Kecskemet, just 20km from the area of infection where geese died of H5N1 last month. It now transpires that some 290 tonnes of turkey breast has gone from Kecskemet into Britain in the past year ... Of course, it can be the same [virus], but I can say that the virus is circulating in the [wild] birds - you can find this... (Guardian Unlimited -- UK)
Turkey waste 'was linked to bird flu' Feb 11, 2007
But then a "sharp-sighted" Defra investigator spotted a label that linked the meat to an abattoir at the town of Kecskemet, some 30 miles away from the farm ... Bernard Matthews confirmed that it did use the slaughterhouse at Kecskemet, but cast doubt on the possibility of cross-infection there, by saying that, according to its information, only turkeys were killed there, not geese.
