Sierra Leone Sentences doubled for ex-militia heads FREETOWN - A UN-backed war crimes court yesterday more than doubled the prison terms for two former militia leaders convicted of overseeing hundreds of killings and mutilations during Sierra Leone's 11-year war. An earlier ruling sentencing Moinina Fofana to six years and Allieu Kondewa to eight years was far too light, the judges ruled. (Boston Globe)

Sierra Leone's Special Court has thus far tried eight individuals associated with the three warring factions during the conflict - Revolutionary United Front, Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), and Civil Defence Forces - in Freetown. Liberia's former president Charles Taylor is being tried by the Special Court, for crimes allegedly committed in Sierra Leone, at the facilities of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
