Transfusions Can Transmit Human Mad Cow Sep 8, 2008
Researchers at the University of Edinburgh conducted a nine-year study of BSE transmission among sheep by means of infected blood in an effort to determine whether infected blood could also transmit vCJD among humans. In sheep, they concluded that the rate of transmission by blood is 36 percent for BSE, and 43 percent for scrapie, which is related to BSE. The researchers also concluded that the longer the blood donor had been infected, the more likely the disease was to be transmitted. (Newsmax)

Scotland letter Sep 2, 2008

Variant of mad cow disease may be transmitted by blood transfusions, according to animal study Aug 29, 2008
The nine-year study conducted at the University of Edinburgh compared rates of disease transmission by examining blood transfusions from sheep infected with BSE or scrapie; the BSE donors were experimentally infected, while the scrapie donors had naturally acquired the disease. While scrapie is not thought to transmit to humans, it was included as an infection acquired under field conditions, which could possibly give different results than those obtained from experimentally infected animals.
