    Other sources suggest that o Kill a Mockingbird was inspired by the Scottsboro Boys, nine black youths who in 1931 tried to get from Alabama to Memphis by oboeing on a freight train. After an altercation with some hoboeing white youths, the boys were arrested and subsequently convicted of raping two white women who had also been on the train despite the fact that one alleged victim admitted to lying about the rape so she could avoid getting arrested.
