In her book The City and the River, 1971 Fitchburg Historical Society, Doris Kirkpatrick includes a fascinating background of Whalom and tells the story of how the Fitchburg and Leominster Street Railway had purchased a pine grove of 75 acres near the lake and that in 1893, the company extended the trolley lines to the depot in the park. Ms. Kirkpatrick also mentions the original rustic summer theater built in 1893, and describes in detail the new theater that was constructed in 1901. (Beacon Villager, MA)
