    In her book The City and the River, 1971 Fitchburg Historical Society, Doris Kirkpatrick includes a fascinating background of Whalom and tells the story of how the Fitchburg and Leominster Street Railway had purchased a pine grove of 75 acres near the lake and that in 1893, the company extended the trolley lines to the depot in the park.
