    HOULTON, Maine A Maine man died this week in a freak accident while splitting firewood. Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin says the victim, 58-year-old David Violette, was using a sledgehammer and a wedge to split wood on Monday when a piece of the wedge broke away and shot into his leg, severing his femoral artery.
