Harlan's oldest and only surviving daughter, Mary Eunice Harlan, married Robert Todd Lincoln in 1868 in Washington, D.C. Robert T. Lincoln would become the only Lincoln child to survive his mother, though his brother, Thomas Lincoln, did live to see their father's death in 1865. James Harlan died at the Harlan Hotel in 1899.
