Veteran newsman Dan Rather sued CBS after he was let go in June 2006 following a controversy that erupted regarding the authenticity of documents used in a 60 Minutes II report about President George W. Bush's military service ... The dispute began with a piece Rather narrated for the now-defunct 60 Minutes II, in which he reported that Bush got preferential treatment during his Vietnam War-era service in the Texas Air National Guard. In 2004, CBS s 60 Minutes II aired a report raising questions about President George W. Bush s National Guard service; however, CBS News ended up apologizing for a mistake in judgment after memos featured in the report were challenged as forgeries. The Genesis space capsule, which had spent three years gathering solar wind samples, crashed to earth when its parachutes failed to deploy. (Boston Globe)
