The term laser is an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, but the first devices of this kind actually used microwaves instead of light and were (and still are) called masers. In early Star Trek days, masers were known, but lasers were very new and apparently the term phaser was short for photon maser, so a phaser is supposed to be a laser of sorts. (Boston Globe)
