Health Care Accounts For Eight Percent Of US Carbon Footprint, Calculation Finds Nov 14, 2009
Chung and Meltzer calculated the carbon footprint using 2007 health care spending and a model of environmental impact, called the environmental input-output life cycle assessment (EIOLCA) model, developed by the Green Design Institute at Carnegie-Mellon University. The study assessed direct environmental effects of health care activities as well as indirect effects capturing emissions generated in the production and distribution of commodities used by the health care sector. A strategy to revive N.J. economy Oct 23, 2009
Such co-location of companies that have input-output relationships within a given industry benefits all companies in that cluster. It can save transaction costs, improve organizational learning through exchange of information among companies within the area and stimulate vigorous competition among companies within the cluster, which, in turn, can promote continuous product innovation, process improvement and cost savings. Researchers Tout "Wimpy Nodes" for Net Oct 17, 2009
"If you look at kinds of workloads that challenge modern computers, those with lots of random access to input-output are incredibly inefficient on high-end CPUs," Andersen said. (Left: The FAWN approach can be adjusted with hard drives or conventional memory to match various sizes of datasets or rates or the queries retrieving that data. (CBS News -- Sci/Tech)

In thin times, tiny netbook is king Mar 21, 2009
The netbook is intended to be just what its name implies a network appliance, an input-output device that accesses the Internet. This is what the industry calls a thin client: a tool to access bigger, more powerful machines over a network, either via Wifi, Ethernet cable or in some cases a USB gizmo that links to the Net via cellphone frequencies. TWO VIEWS: Recession won't be ended by 'green jobs' Mar 16, 2009
Predictions that massive spending on green projects will create gobs of new jobs stem from "input-output analysis" -- a technique that presumes stable prices and stable technology. The "green jobs" proposals assume the opposite: Energy prices will soar and rapid technological change in improving everything from biofuels to wind turbines will make these technologies economically viable very soon. Engineering Graduate Student Narrows Gap Between High-resolution Video And Virtual Reality Feb 18, 2009
"Our approach reduces the memory required to display high-resolution images, depending on distance and visual perspective, he said. If the area is big and close to the viewer's face, the video is streamed at a high-resolution; if it s small and far away from the viewer's face, it's streamed at a low-resolution. Another issue is how to read a lot of data efficiently, Kim added. If I want to render a particular frame in the VE, the data has to already be in the system and I have to read it from...
