" New chip For its part Intel is building a purpose-built system on a chip designed specifically for the web-connected consumer electronics market. It will be able to handle high-definition viewing, home theatre quality audio, 3-D graphics and bring net connectivity to the TV. Mr Kim urged the consumer electronics industry to embrace the new CE 3100 chip, code-named Canmore, in an effort to "create an ecosystem to enhance the viewer experience". New Open-source Camera Could Revolutionize Photography Sep 5, 2009
To create an open-source camera, Levoy and the group cobbled together a number of different parts: the motherboard, per se, is a Texas Instruments "system on a chip" running Linux with image and general processors and a small LCD screen. The imaging chip is taken from a Nokia N95 cell phone, and the lenses are off-the-shelf Canon lenses, but they are combined with actuators to give the camera its fine-tuned software control. Best known for its graphics chips, the Californian company is focussed on its Tegra design, a "complete system on a chip" aimed at powering netbooks and even smaller internet connected computers. Tegra combines eight different processors, each one dedicated to a specific task such as HD video decoding or audio playback, packing them onto a circuit board about the size of a pack of chewing gum.
