Silence Of The Genes: Researchers Get First Look At Gene-Silencing Human RISC-Loading Complex  Oct 15, 2009
Known as a human RISC-loading complex, this structure consists of snippets of ribonucleic acid (RNA) that control whether genetic messages are silenced or expressed ... From these new images, the research team, led by biochemist Jennifer Doudna and biophysicist Eva Nogales, has been able to propose a model of how RISC and other so-called small RNA molecules are able to target specific messenger RNA molecules for gene silencing and/or destruction ... RISC stands for RNA-Induced Silencing Complex.... (Science Daily)

Can the x86 Just Keep Going?  Oct 6, 2009
There have been many attempts to knock off the x86, from Sparc to HP's PA-RISC to SGI's MIPS to DEC's Alpha. But resistance proved futile; many PA-RISC and Alpha engineers now work for Intel on the Itanium, which was also supposed to retire x86 ... Next page: Taking a RISC. (SmallBusinessComputing)

Reporter's notebook: Sundown for Sun?  Apr 1, 2009
Over the years, I've watch Sun take on the industry in such heated matchups as the OpenLook versus OSF/Motif GUI battle on the Unix desktop and watched its Unix OS square off against Unix variants such as HP-UX and IBM AIX. On the chip side, Sun's SPARC RISC chip vied for the hearts of IT against IBM Power, HP PA-RISC, and DEC Alpha. Sun always did its own thing and was undaunted when opposed by more established companies such as it did when it faced off against OSF (the Open Software... (InfoWorld)

Evidence of a tick RNAi pathway by comparative genomics and reverse genetics screen of targets with known loss-of-function phenotypes in Drosophila  Mar 27, 2009
Our analysis identified 30 RNAi proteins including a putative tick Dicer, RISC associated (Ago-2, TudorSN, FMRp), RNA dependent RNA polymerase (EGO-1) and 20 homologues implicated in dsRNA uptake and processing. We then selected 10 R. microplus ESTs with >80% similarity to D. melanogaster proteins associated with cell viability for RNAi functional screens in both BME26 R. microplus embryonic cells and female ticks in vivo. IBM said to be poring over Sun's contracts  Mar 21, 2009
Both have a Unix server OS, a RISC chip architecture, at least one enterprise database and a whole line of middleware. Any deal would create uncertainty for customers as to which products IBM would continue to develop and support. (InfoWorld)

Multicore Processors: How long will the pain last?  Feb 21, 2009
Just as RISC stood for "Relegate the Important Stuff to the Compiler," increasing the number of threads per socket places an enormous stress -- to parallelize applications and reap the performance increases -- on almost the entire computing industry. Those affected include the system manufacturers, the compiler writers (who are used to being the punching bags), the operating system designers, the application writers, and finally (and inevitably) the users. Felkner has pushed for giving parents the right to pick the school they want (and take the money with them) so the big government people and unions don't like him. I read his blog a lot and not sure I have seen him weigh in on the tax equalization, but if Charlestown wants him out then maybe he does pose a threat to them.
