Braves, Padres reportedly near Peavy deal  Nov 22, 2008
Peavy gave the Padres seven clubs they could talk to, but the talks have generally centered on the Braves, who are intent on bolstering their pitching, what with the futures of aging stars Tom Glavine and John Smoltz very much up in the air. Both underwent surgery this past season -- Smoltz on his right shoulder and Glavine on his left elbow. (MLB.com -- San Diego Padres)

Greg Maddux seems a lock for induction in 2013, while Randy Johnson continues his pursuit of 300 victories to ensure his enshrinement, following Tom Glavine's accomplishment. Voters will eventually have a headache considering the candidacy of Roger Clemens in light of his recent issues, and while the likes of Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and Curt Schilling will demand inspection, Mussina said that he hopes his statistics will be compared in the era in which he pitched. That 123 ERA+ is better than, among others, Tom Glavine, Bob Feller, Bert Blyleven, Warren Spahn, Gaylord Perry, Steve Carlton, Jim Bunning and Nolan Ryan. He has certainly pumped up plenty of good counting numbers if you care about those -- 270 victories places him 33rd all-time, which sure isn't bad in this five-man rotation, bring-in-the bullpen era. Braves: Padres wanted too much for Peavy  Nov 16, 2008
With Tom Glavine (elbow/shoulder) and John Smoltz (shoulder) both coming off injuries and both being free agents as well as Mike Hampton exploring the open market, the Braves have several voids to fill. The Cubs also were reported to be serious suitors for Peavy, though Cubs manager Lou Piniella told the Chicago Sun-Times earlier this week that he thought the idea of Chicago trading for Peavy was "only talk." Peavy, who has a no-trade clause in his contract with the Padres, initially... (MSNBC -- Sports)

Peavy to pitch for Braves? Perhaps  Oct 7, 2008
For a Braves team with more than $40 mill, perhaps more than $45 mill, to spend on additions for 2009, Peavy s backloaded contract would work well because it would also allow them to sign or trade for another starting pitcher and outfielder, and bring back whichever ones they can or want to from the pitching group of Mike Hampton and the two still-not-sure-if-they-can-pitch-agains, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine.
