Johnny Podres, 75; pitched Brooklyn to 1955 title  Jan 15, 2008
"He was fun to play behind because he was always around the plate and he threw quality strikes when the game was on the line. In 1955, Mr. Podres was overshadowed by many of his teammates, which included Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese, Roy Campanella, Gil Hodges, and Snider in a star-studded lineup, and Newcombe and Carl Erskine on the pitching staff. And Mr. Podres didn't give any indication during the regular season of the greatness that lay ahead. The question is, what kind of hitter was I? Did I do things for the team or more as an individual? I could have been more selfish, but when I played it was a team thing. If you tell a young guy now, you've got to hit 500 home runs to get to the Hall of Fame, he'd have to decide if he wants to do that.''Rice, on the ballot for the 14th... (MSNBC -- Sports)

Markowitz said that after he got wind of the impending O'Malley selection last month, he wrote a letter asking the committee to make a deal "if you're going to elect O'Malley, then give Brooklyn some respect by putting that great Dodger, Gil Hodges, in the Hall of Fame as well.". Hodges was a popular player in the heyday of the Dodgers and his repeated rejection by the Hall of fame since 1987 has become something of a cause celebre in Brooklyn.
