Hayes, a gold-medal winner in the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games in the 100 meters and the 4x100 meter relay, moved on from a world-class track career and Florida A&M football player (1960-64) to an All-Pro career in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys (1965-72).
