Mayweather retiring -- or just playing dodge? After hinting at retirement the past two years, WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. decided Friday to hang up his boxing gloves for good. Whether or not he can remain away from the sport that has consumed his life since childhood will be a subject of discussion. Some will argue Mayweather isn't retiring at all; that he is simply biding time in an effort to avoid Miguel Cotto, who is scheduled to defend his WBA 147-pound title July 26 against Antonio Margarito. Others will surmise that he wants no part of Oscar De La Hoya -- the two were scheduled to meet for the second time in September. The first argument -- avoiding Cotto -- has little bite. Mayweather has made clear his reasons for not fighting Cotto numerous times. And it has nothing to do with fear of defeat. He repeatedly said Cotto must prove himself to be a marquee fighter. That meant facing a major draw, like De La Hoya or Ricky Hatton. Cotto has been a big drawing card in New York City, particularly at Madison Square Garden, but his numbers in Atlantic City are disappointing. Cotto has yet to show he can attract a broad audience outside New York. Secondly, Cotto fights for Top Rank, Inc. And Mayweather said over and over he would not put money in Top Rank boss Bob Arum's pockets. The two have been at odds for several years and show no sign of reconciling. As for De La Hoya, it could be said he deserved the decision May 5, 2007, in his first fight with Mayweather. Many ringside observers gave De La Hoya the nod -- most had it for Mayweather as did The Star-Ledger, 116-112. Those favoring De La Hoya in the rematch point to his trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr. -- who is Mayweather's estranged father. His presence would have increased De La Hoya's confidence, but not his performance. In his most recent fight, a unanimous decision May 3 over Steve Forbes, De La Hoya was not overly impressive. His punches were slow, and he was hit too often. Had Mayweather Jr. been in the ring that night, De La Hoya would have lost. Regardless, those who dislike Mayweather will question his motive for retiring. He says it's "difficult ... to find the desire and joy to continue." That reason is good enough. Hopefully he will stick to his decision. Mayweather is 31 years old, and for at least 29 of those years he was a fighter or training to be one. All the preparation made him one of the most-gifted fighters ever, surely in this era. Time will determine where he sits among the all-time greats. This much is certain, right now Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0-0, 25 knockouts) is the best boxer in the world pound-for-pound -- bar none. And he doesn't need to fight De La Hoya, Cotto, Margarito, Shane Mosley, Winky Wright, Kelly Pavlik, Bernard Hopkins, Joe Calzaghe, Wladimir Klitschko or anyone else to prove it. Whether Mayweather is liked as a person or not, boxing purists marvel at his skills. They appreciate his elusive defense, footwork, balance, quick hands and pinpoint accuracy. He wasn't the hardest puncher at 147 pounds, but when on top of his game Mayweather could sting any opponent. Ask Ricky Hatton if Mayweather's punches hurt. A few weeks after his win over De La Hoya, Mayweather met with a small group of reporters at HBO headquarters in New York. There he said, "I'm not going to be doing this (fighting) too much longer. You guys better enjoy me while I'm here because one day soon it will be over." That day has finally come. Now who will dare to take Mayweather's place as the best boxer in the world pound-for-pound?
