RESPONSE: The Jan. 20 edition of the newspaper included a reader's recommendation in the "Annie's Mailbox" column to contact the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches for information on homosexuality and the Bible. This is tantamount to referring people to a national women's group for information on abortion and the Bible. (Tyler Morning Telegraph, TX)

She would soon become one of the first three heterosexuals to join the church, and in 1974 at age 50, she became the second woman ever to be ordained a minister in the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, the denomination's full name.
