    -- It wasn't long ago that thousands of members of the Church Universal and Triumphant followed their leader's call to donate their life savings to build underground shelters against a coming nuclear apocalypse. Yet Armageddon never came, and after a decade-long decline caused by Alzheimer's disease, Elizabeth Clare Prophet -- "Mother" to her followers -- died last month at age 70. (Casper Star-Tribune, WY)

    Under the name Church Universal and Triumphant they eventually moved to California in 1976, and finally to Montana in 1986, where they bought a 12,000-acre ranch just north of Yellowstone Park. Being convinced that the end of the world was near, they built a 756-person underground bomb shelter in a pristine alpine meadow and stocked up on firearms. (Harper's Magazine)

    In 1975, she founded the Church Universal and Triumphant, a formal religion with ceremonies and sacraments, extending the work of the Lighthouse. The religion s teachings were derived from divine messages believed to be transmitted by the Ascended Masters, a pantheon of mystic saints and sages, among them Jesus and the Theosophist master El Morya.     He went on several mission trips for the Church Universal and Triumphant, and then returned to help his parents on the farm, also working for some of the neighbors. He was always a caring neighbor and friend. (Charles City Press, IO)

    Ranch meant for migrating Yellowstone bison unused  May 16, 2009
