A writer no matter what  Nov 15, 2009
The book is a collection of two dozen articles, book reviews, and introductions, all of which revisit familiar territory: mathematics and logic; defense of a Darwinian theory of evolution against, most recently, that of intelligent design; dismantlement of the paranormal; and unmanning religious fundamentalism on the right and atheism on the left. Ann Coulter gets a good drubbing at his hands as does Oral Roberts s son, Richard. (Boston Globe)

The on-again, off-again 500-year-old marriage and divorce of Catholicism and Anglicanism matters because they are both, much bigger and more omnipotent than atheism will be for the foreseeable future. The world is still deeply religious and what happens in the relationship between these two churches is not only great political drama but tells us how humanity deals with suffering, with ritual, with sex, with gender and with the trauma of change.
