    Since Indonesia ratified the 1886 Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works in 1997, it should effectively enforce legislation to protect authors' rights to decide when and whether to publish works, as well as the rights of the 750 legal publishers in the Indonesian Publishers Association. The convention, influenced by France's Rights of the Author, requires states to protect the copyright of a book for a period of the life of the author plus 50 years.
