    Commission adopts game bird hunting regulations  Aug 9, 2008
    SALEM Oregon s Fish and Wildlife Commission on Friday adopted 2008-09 regulations for birds hunted in Oregon including migratory birds (duck, goose, mourning dove, band-tailed pigeon, coot, snipe) upland birds (pheasant, forest grouse, chukar, pheasant, California quail, mountain quail, sage grouse, turkey) and crows. Most upland bird seasons operate under a five-year framework so hunters won t see many changes this year. (Albany Democrat-Herald, OR)

    The loss of once-common Bay Area birds, such as California Quail, Spotted Towhees, Wrentits, Yellow Warblers and Burrowing Owls, may not be obvious in our daily lives, but it is another sure sign and warning of how our natural world is diminishing.     " July 3) welcoming the recently observed coyote to San Francisco. One of the several "ecosystem services" provided by coyotes in some areas has been to prey on feral and otherwise unattended house cats, thereby lessening or removing the cats' deleterious impact on native wildlife. I can only hope that the coyote's arrival means good news for the beleaguered population of California quail in Golden Gate Park.
