    Environmentalists decry rule change  Jul 5, 2008
    The National Parks Conservation Association, and the San Juan Citizens' Alliance, claim the relaxed rules would clear the way for construction of the proposed Desert Rock coal-fired power plant in northern New Mexico, further endangering air quality and visibility at Mesa Verde National Park. The agencies held a news conference at Mesa Verde on Wednesday to voice their concerns, saying the EPA was preparing to complete the new rules. (Durango Herald)

    A local man will not be visiting Mesa Verde National Park soon, after leading illegal tours through the ruins and posing as a park ranger. Scott Raymond Sorenson pleaded guilty on Dec. 21 to violating several federal laws, and has been banned from the park for three years and from all National Park Service areas for one year.     Water samples showed high levels of manganese in the reservoir, and Robert Thompson, a retired professor of environmental science at Arizona State University alerted the Pine River volunteers to potential airborne mercury pollution at Vallecito as well as at Mesa Verde National Park and Narraguinnep Reservoir in Montezuma County.
