    It goes without saying that Stewart's announcement last season that he was leaving the security and stellar equipment at Joe Gibbs Racing to run his own team, and not just any team but a team run by convicted tax cheat Gene Haas, was met with great skepticism. For those reasons and because the list of failed owner-drivers in NASCAR was as long as a summer's day, it was expected Stewart would wallow in mediocrity before finally admitting the error of his ways.
