News and Articles on Uncle Tupelo

Alternative Country Magazine Back in New Format  Nov 26, 2008
Founded in 1995 by three friends in Seattle, the name No Depression came from a Carter Family song covered in 1990 by the seminal alt-county band Uncle Tupelo, whose descendants Son Volt and Wilco were profiled in its first few issues. The Ryan Adams-fronted Whiskeytown was on an early cover, and violinist Caitlin Cary described in one article as "the serene presence next to Adams' rambunctious antics" said she only realized years later the importance of the magazine's story. Looking at this Braves winter and beyond  Oct 3, 2008
In one day picked up a haul that included: The mighty Otis Redding s reissued Live In London & Paris; Okkervil River s The Stand Ins (I like it, but not quite as much as their last two); Teddy Thompson s A Piece of What You Need (Richard Thompson s son has become quite a performer in his own right); Gentleman Jesse s self-titled debut CD (folks, I can t recommend this brilliant recording from an Atlanta band high enough for any of you who like, say, early Joe Jackson or Nick Lowe, or just great... New tour, new album for Old 97's  Sep 25, 2008
"That's nice," Miller says of being mentioned in the same breath as groups like Uncle Tupelo, Wilco and Whiskeytown. "The more time marches on, the more I feel that sentiment. I was a big fan of a lot of the bands that came before us and were doing something similar, like X, but it's a big river that keeps flowing and I'm glad we're a part of it. Maybe when I'm older I'll get more perspective on it, but for now it's all too much.". (Athens Banner-Herald)

    F Yeah Music Fest  Sep 3, 2008
Where is the next level of artistic depth that once seemed inevitable when bands like Uncle Tupelo and The Jayhawks roamed the midwest. David Vandervelde is cut from that same cloth of talented country songsmiths as Tweedy, Louris and Farrar, but he really doesn't stray from the tried and true formula of honky-tonk rave-ups and weep into your Pabst ballads that seems to define nearly every band under the alt-country tag. (Variety)

    Wilco's growth  Jul 25, 2008
Only Stirratt and singer Jeff Tweedy are left from the original incarnation, a four-piece that rose from the ashes of relatively popular alt-country outfit Uncle Tupelo ... Q. You joined Uncle Tupelo in 1993, and since then the band has reformed as Wilco, been the subject of a film, produced a book, had a book written about it and won Grammys. (Anchorage Daily News)

    This isn't funny-like-a-clown funny  Jul 25, 2008
But had I not heard Being There, Summerteeth or Uncle Tupelo records, I never woulda listened to Built to Spill, Death Cab, My Morning Jacket, or even Townes Van Zandt, Waylon Jennings, etc. So I hear ya. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution -- Sports)

    Jammin' Tonight!  Jun 27, 2008
When "Vitalogy" became available very late in 1994, I was already onto acts that Pearl Jam opened the doors for, older bands like Dinosaur Jr., Flaming Lips and Uncle Tupelo. But I kept buying Pearl Jam records, and they kept getting worse until the 2006 self-titled comeback, which is truly a very good album, one that got me excited to see the guys at the 2006 show in Hartford. Son to shine  May 30, 2008
Years before, he worked with Jeff Tweedy in Uncle Tupelo, but Tweedy went on to form Wilco (which performs at the Moose's Tooth later this summer) while Farrar explored solo projects. He reformed the band with Dave Bryson on drums, Andrew DuPlantis on bass, Brad Rice on guitar (since the 2005 release "Okemah and the Melody of Riot") and Derry deBorja on piano. Have 'Gun'-Will Travel: Band eyes road for new album  Apr 18, 2008
We get pegged as alt-country, but there are a lot of young people out there who've never heard Uncle Tupelo and don't know what alt-country means. Growing up, I didn't listen to Uncle Tupelo either - I was always into Brit Rock. (Athens Banner-Herald)

Decisions coming for Braves  Mar 21, 2008
All night these mindless riffs from these awful insipid country booger-eating songs I m not asking for anything crazy, maybe trick somebody into playing some Uncle Tupelo or Drive By Truckers riffs, just tell them it s an old Garth Brooks tune, they ll never know. " Holmes plays in the new incarnation of Love Tractor (a band that was among the many revered in Athens in the early 1980s, though today's version features a different lineup). His guitar and keyboard work has adorned recordings and concerts for Mallonee's Vigilantes of Love, the Michael Guthrie Band and Uncle Tupelo, among others. The concert's original intent, Holmes says, was to cheer up Forbes' family and to remember a treasured friend. "We didn't want (Tim Forbes) to isolate himself, so I... (Athens Banner-Herald)

Band of Horses  Nov 28, 2007
Lead singer Benjamin Bridwell's high, desultory tenor is a close relation of the Shins' James Mercer, the spacey, sweet and sour harmonies of keyboardist Ryan Monroe push things toward Uncle Tupelo; when the guitars build to massive, echoing anthems, they resemble My Morning Jacket, when they turn small and cribbed, they favor Built To Spill. But oddly, over the 90-minute set, the band's combination of Seattle guitar noise with Southern harmonies, the style that's most evoked is the country-rock... (Variety)

" With and without his brother - who died in an auto accident in 1965, two years after the two split up their act - Louvin has done well by the old school. The Louvin Brothers had more than a dozen hit records, including "Must You Throw Dirt In My Face," between 1955 and 1963, and Louvin released another dozen hits as a solo performer. Alt-country band Blue Mountain reunites  Jun 28, 2007
Alongside acts such as Uncle Tupelo, they were at the forefront of defining alt-country, an emerging sound that took elements of traditional country, bluegrass, blues and gospel music and melded it with the wild abandon of punk and rock 'n' roll ... What happened was our A who was the guy who originally signed Uncle Tupelo to Rockville Records, his name's Jeff Packman, he went to work for Roadrunner and he was the one who signed us to Roadrunner. Son Volt gives its Americana sound an energising jolt  May 22, 2007
Since seminal alt-country band Uncle Tupelo broke up in 1994, the critics' line has been that bassist Jeff Tweedy's next band Wilco was much more experimental, while singer-guitarist Jay Farrar's Son Volt kept the Americana sound's fire burning ... If that's surprising, remember this is the Farrar who, when re-forming Son Volt after a five-year hiatus in 2003, balked at demands by band members - former Uncle Tupelo drummer Mike Heidorn and Jim and Dave Boquist - and simply built a new band... Wilco aboard  May 21, 2007
" Jeff Tweedy is a man who struggles against misconceptions. The 39-year-old singer has led his roots-born, rock-raised group Wilco through six studio albums since 1995, but has felt pigeon-holed and misunderstood at every turn. He was an alt-country hero after Wilco rose from the ashes of Uncle Tupelo, a band whose sound and style virtually launched that modern country rock genre. Then he was a traitor to the cause, when Wilco began to cast aside narrow definitions and explore its experimental... (The Age)

Nice and easy does it for Wilco this time  May 16, 2007
From the orchestrated pop of Summerteeth to the poignancy of such tracks as "Ashes of American Flags" from Yankee, the songwriter has consistently shown the resolve to push himself beyond the boundaries of alt-country expectation established by Uncle Tupelo, the early 90s band he co-fronted along with Jay Farrar ... Uncle Tupelo s cover of the Carter Family s song "No Depression" inspired an Internet message board and then a magazine that became shorthand for the rootsy Americana sound that, it... Nary a dark cloud across 'Blue Sky' (Adam Mazmanian)  May 16, 2007
Wilco's hard-core fans are famously dedicated, having chosen up sides after Mr. Tweedy's split from his one-time friend and partner Jay Farrar, with whom he founded the pathbreaking band Uncle Tupelo -- the band that virtually invented the genre of alt-country. Mr. Tweedy's fans have followed his career through many transformations; it will be interesting to see how they respond in concert to his new softer side. (Washington Times, DC)

    Wilco's sweet frustration  May 16, 2007
In 1995, seminal alt-country band Uncle Tupelo split up, with co-founder Jay Farrar forming Son Volt and Tweedy starting Wilco, which released a pair of albums (A.M. and 1996's Being There) that roughly followed in the same rough-cut vein of Uncle Tupelo. With 1999's Summerteeth, Wilco veered in a different direction. (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)

Sky Blue Sky  May 16, 2007
Since the breakup of Uncle Tupelo, every album Jeff Tweedy has released with Wilco has faced mountains of expectation as to how it will and should sound. At the same time, every Wilco record has consistently defied those expectations in one way or another. (PopMatters)

Indie Study: Two Cow Garages country rock  Apr 27, 2007

COMMENTARY: Nothing but 'Blue Skies' ahead for Wilco  Apr 27, 2007
Wilco broke into a strong start as a band in the mid-'90s following the split-up of seminal alternative-roots rock outfit Uncle Tupelo ... Principally dominated by Tweedy's songwriting, Wilco soon released its first album, "A.M.", featuring songs very much akin to Tweedy's alt-country efforts in Uncle Tupelo. (U-Wire.com)

Son Volt returns in top form at the Paradise  Apr 17, 2007
It's little wonder Son Volt's restless, questing new album is titled "The Search," but in fact the cheap motels, border patrols, and Mexicali radio stations that populate new standouts "Highways and Cigarettes" and "Methamphetamine" are merely the latest markers for the themes of wanderlust and dislocation Farrar's explored since he led the proto-alt-country icon Uncle Tupelo. Even the unhurried pace and weathered parch of his vocals suggested winding roadways and driving detours -- Farrar... (Boston Globe)

    A country music heavyweight  Apr 6, 2007
Emmylou Harris' first hit was the Louvins' "If I Could Only Win Your Love." The Louvin Brothers were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in October 2001. (Mail Tribune, OR)

    Southern comfort  Apr 4, 2007
Such democratic arrangements can be disastrous Uncle Tupelo, for example, met its demise because co-founders Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar couldn't strike that balance but Cooley and Hood have been able to make it work, although for his part, Hood can't say why. e get along great now, but for years and years we didn't, Hood said. Here s a list of new and old I can t get enough of: Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, Jay Farrar, Son Volt, Drive-by Truckers, Uncle Tupelo, Deadstring Brothers, Endrick Brothers, and Old 97 s. There are plenty of others, but these get me amped. Deadstring and Endrick are new to me, and both are fantastic, especially Deadstring. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution -- Sports)

'The Search' takes listeners far (Adam Mazmanian)  Mar 6, 2007
Mr. Farrar came to prominence as the frontman for Uncle Tupelo, the seminal alt-country band he founded with high school classmate Jeff Tweedy ... Mr. Tweedy went on to found Wilco, which hewed closer to Uncle Tupelo's country roots ... This number is the class act of the album, brooding and atmospheric in the manner of the best old Uncle Tupelo tracks and so authentically country that the mind fills in the sound of tires rumbling over blacktop amid the strummed chords and pedal-steel wails. (Washington Times)

    A Sentimental Trip  Mar 5, 2007
The fifth studio album by Son Volt, the band Farrar founded in 1994 after the pioneering alt-country group Uncle Tupelo broke up, finds him exploring the divide between independent America and a way of life increasingly tied to technology, for better and worse. Songs about the lonely romance of life on the road jostle with the paranoia of post-9/11 life, where it's easier than ever to access information and keep in touch, even as it's easier for the powers that be to monitor who we're in touch... Pour some Tweedy on Me  Feb 5, 2007
While at times in his career this statement would perfectly describe Jeff Tweedy's demeanor during his live performances with Uncle Tupelo and Wilco, Knoxville saw a softer side of Tweedy during his second to last performance on his solo jaunt ... Tweedy's 23-song set was lined with ghosts of his past (Uncle Tupelo) and hits from his present success ... At the end of his lengthy show, Tweedy performed two encores, the final at the edge of the stage unaccompaniedby amplification - just his voice... (East Tennessean, TN)

Jeff Tweedy dominates Alabama Theatre  Jan 29, 2007
He was good at playing a variety of songs careful to pull from everything he had been involved with - from Uncle Tupelo to his own solo songs, and of course, Wilco songs. Among the many highlights was the song "Gun" off the Uncle Tupelo album "Still Feel Gone," first released in 1991. (The Crimson White, AL)

" In the late '80s and early '90s, Uncle Tupelo, the Jayhawks, the Bottle Rockets, the Old 97's and other bands launched the indie alt-country movement that bolstered the legacy of Parsons, who had done himself in with tequila and morphine in 1973 while vacationing near Joshua Tree National Monument. By 1995, Parsons was being memorialized in a Cosmic American Music Festival, a.k.a. Gram Fest, in Joshua Tree (San Bernardino County). A few years later Shea inaugurated the local San Francisco...
