Tenor Piotr Beczala, with superb company appearances already under his belt in operas by Tchaikovsky and Mozart, cemented his standing with a fluent, bright-toned turn as Rodolfo. A search for the spirit of BSO seasons past  Sep 21, 2008
The program is a shiny all-Russian affair with music by Glinka, Tchaikovsky, and Mussorgsky in which the orchestra is almost guaranteed to dazzle. But the questions on my mind recently have been about the precise nature of that dazzle, about how the tenure of music director James Levine has been evolving, and about what appears to be an easing away from the boldness and breadth of vision that characterized his opening years with the orchestra. Passionate embrace ends with a bang  Sep 19, 2008
Over the next 10 years his performances of Stravinsky's The Rite Of Spring, of Ravel, Prokofiev, Brahms and Tchaikovsky were enthusiastically received as refreshingly sensual after de Waart's discipline. Music review: MTT deftly mixes party, concert  Sep 6, 2008
Like Tchaikovsky - a fellow master of dance music who professed his own admiration for "Sylvia" - Delibes composes with a mixture of tenderness and muscle that is utterly enchanting. The Rimsky centenary: More music, please  Aug 5, 2008
He also was something of a reactionary, Stravinsky said, an anti-Tsarist politically who nonetheless refused to listen to new music from France and Germany (particularly Richard Strauss), and was utterly dismissive of Tchaikovsky. All of which is interesting, but more important from posterity s standpoint is that Rimsky worked tirelessly on behalf of other composers, most particularly Modest Mussorgsky, his fellow Balakirev acolyte. (The Palm Beach Post)

    It ain't so, Joe  Jul 24, 2008
Forty years and 1500 concerts have rendered him not only sick and tired of sitting in concert halls alongside the old, affluent, uninformed or plain stupid (those who like their Mozart sweet and their Tchaikovsky loud) but the cumulative effect has filled him with hatred for any living composer who hasn't had enough time yet to acquire the Bach mystique or the Beethoven magic. Those who tried embracing history or simple rhythms are dismissed as facile, eclectic or even infantile, while the... (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

Joe Queenan: New classical music is torture  Jul 13, 2008
But they do this only because these works tend to be short and not terribly atonal; because they know this is the last time in their lives they'll have to listen to them; and because the orchestra has signed a contract in blood guaranteeing that if everyone holds their nose and eats their vegetables, they'll be rewarded with a great dollop of Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn. I started listening to classical music when I entered college, aged 17. (Guardian Unlimited -- Arts)

For infants, musical exposure is simple and complex  Jul 13, 2008
Would the child grow up finally able to realize Schoenberg's dream of having his music treated as no more exotic or challenging than that of Tchaikovsky. Would this young native speaker of atonality be inclined, as Schoenberg hoped, to casually whistle 12-tone music as he walked down the street. (Boston Globe)

    The Fly doesn't fly  Jul 8, 2008
Staged at the famous Theatre du Chatelet, where Paris's cultural elite have since the mid-19th century enjoyed appearances by classical music legends like Tchaikovsky and Richard Strauss, the modern opera is being warmly received by the public but sneered at by reviewers. "In the Heights" (Ghostlight Records): Years ago, as a teenager in New York, I would step out of ballet classes set to the music of Tchaikovsky and Chopin and secretly thrill to the liberating sounds of Latin music that often poured out of storefronts on my way to the subway. Contest a key to success  Jun 2, 2008
Judging by her performance of the Tchaikovsky B-flat minor Concerto with the Orchestre M;tropolitain du Grand Montr;al in the competition's final round, I shouldn't have thought so. While there was much musicality and pianistic talent on display, her playing was also patchy, full of technical slips and an imperfect interaction with the hard working but minimally rehearsed orchestra under Jean-Marie Zeitouni's direction. (Toronto Star)

Myth Of Choice  May 29, 2008
Yet with its throbbing Tchaikovsky score - some of the most emotional ballet music ever composed - and its eloquent, adroitly varied choreography, the results can be magical. How magical depends on the ensemble, but largely on the leads, Siegfried and Odette/Odile, for the double role is given by the same ballerina. (New York Post -- Entertainment)

I flew to New York on the day spring arrived and all along 90th Street a lovely blue flower called Pushkinia blossomed which is named for the poet who, according to Russians, cannot be translated into English, but Tchaikovsky made a gorgeous opera of "Eugene Onegin," which is some consolation, and then there is the flower. I flew on Northwest Airlines, which now, like Pushkin, will vanish into the earth, devoured by Delta, and this makes me a little sad. (International Herald Tribune -- Ed/Op)

Berry still true to his legendary tunes  Apr 16, 2008
After some fiddling and fussing, Berry took another stab at telling "Tchaikovsky the news." A bluesy reading of Little Walter's "Mean Old World" followed a spry "Sweet Little Sixteen," and a crisp "Carol" still swung eternally. But in fact, while his voice remained the wiry tenor that had jumped out of a million jukeboxes, Berry didn't play a lot of guitar, or finish a lot of songs, during his choppy 45-minute set, which leaned heavily on his own legendary personage and Daryl Davis's boogie... No orchestra, no costumes, no point  Apr 8, 2008
Some of the arias are tuneful and some of the small ensembles and choruses are worth performing alone, but the cogent musical connective tissue that is the lifeblood of Russian opera, from Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky to (Rimsky's pupils) Prokofiev and Stravinsky, just isn't there. At least, it's not there in the piano reduction (or practice score, our orchestra Sunday), which is unlovely and just barely coherent except during some of the arias. Even in movies such as `Star Wars' and `Lord of the Rings,' all of their composers are imitating Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Wagner,'' he said. Singers, orchestra rise above flawed concept of Onegin  Apr 4, 2008
The Canadian Opera Company's production of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, which opened on Wednesday, is extremely well sung ... ra national du Rhin by Switzerland's Marco Arturo Marelli and seen onto the stage here by Italy's Enrico De Feo, flouts enough of Tchaikovsky's opera to be seriously exasperating ... Nor do Marelli's interferences with Tchaikovsky end there. (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)

April 2, 2008 -- GAMBLING has fascinated Russian opera composers, from Tchaikovsky ("The Queen of Spades") to Shostakovich ("The Gamblers"). In between we have Sergei Prokofiev's "The Gambler," based, for a darker change, on Dostoevsky. (New York Post -- Entertainment)

The magic and madness of an eternal swan  Apr 1, 2008
The ballet was born in Moscow in 1877 when Julius Reisinger choreographed the work to a score of Tchaikovsky who admired the work of Wagner, especially Lohengrin, the story of an heroic swan prince.
