Jerry Wexler, record producer, dies Aug 16, 2008
In 1950, while he was still at Billboard, he encountered the young singer Patti Page and hummed for her a 1947 song he liked, "The Tennessee Waltz." Her subsequent recording of it sold three million copies in eight months. A few years later he was a partner at Atlantic, presiding over the 1954 recording session of Ray Charles's breakout hit, "I Got a Woman." He said later that the best thing he had done for Charles was to let him do as he pleased. (International Herald Tribune -- Arts)

Wistful memories of music and TV Jul 26, 2008
We started the decade of the '50s listening to the "predictable" music of Perry Como, Joni James, Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page and Nat "King" Cole, and other easy-listening music. The decade ended with the noisy, primitive sounds of songs like "Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko-Bop," and other "cool" sounds sung by a screaming Little Richard, a rau cous Bill Haley, a hop-scotching Jerry Lee Lewis and an incredible performer named Presley with amazing rubber hips who went on to become a musical legend. It's still ROCK N' ROLL to me Jun 6, 2008
So I took this old Patti Page song, 'Tennessee Waltz,' and turned it into a rock 'n' roll song," Comstock says. Thanks to the twist of turning the classic country waltz into a rock song, Comstock's version ended up being one of his biggest hits. With a number of popular records under his belt, Comstock and his band headed down to New York City, and began knocking on doors. "We met with Herb Abrams, who was one of the original founders of Atlantic Records, with whom he had just split. He wasn't a... (Ithaca Times, NY)

Patti Page was a singer at that time ---- I have always considered her the best singer of all time ... While in the coffee room, who should I spy but Patti Page, my favorite singer of all time ... In the upstate New York city I grew up in, in the late 1970s, there was a radio station that played what it called "the music of your life." The fact that I can't for the life of me remember what kind of music this station played -- Old Patti Page songs. All Creedence, all the time. (Salon)

He went on to work for MGM in Hollywood, making Zabriskie Point (1968) which was infused with the counterculture/psychedelic feeling of the times, and had a soundtrack provided by Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, The Youngbloods, John Fahey and The Kaleidescope, plus a song from Patti Page. The White Stripes - Icky Thump Jun 22, 2007
Such new instrumentation still doesnt prepare for the shocking conquistador take on the old Patti Page chestnut, Conquest. Echoing Jacks recent penchant for mariachi threads, and expanding on that flamenco figure from White Blood Cells I Think I Smell a Rat, he trades piercing trills with a trumpet; its easily the most bombastic, jaw-clenching White Stripes song to date. (Paste Magazine)
* CD reviews Jun 21, 2007
(Little Cream Soda is the closest they've gotten to metal; the album's only song not written by White, Conquest, copped off a Patti Page record, is chest-beating kitsch. The setup's the same, the colors richer. (Taipei Times, Taiwan -- Business)
Modern rock at its best Jun 21, 2007
Jack White of the White Stripes channels diverse influences from Patti Page to Led Zeppelin on the band's new CD, Icky Thump ... There's some odd Latin trumpet on Conquest that evokes a ramped-up rock 'n' roll bullfight, but the song is a re-make of an old Patti Page mariachi tune, which suddenly, somehow, makes the aggressive fighting sound make sense. (Vancouver Sun)
Stuck in the Middle With the Stripes Jun 20, 2007
But perhaps the most representative song on "Icky Thump" is the group's cover of "Conquest," originally sung by Patti Page in the 1950s and re-imagined by the Stripes as a Spaghetti Western send-up, with crackling mariachi trumpets, a yelping title-card of a refrain, and tumbleweed rolling through the background. The kitschy success of the song serves mostly to point out the ordinary nature (by the Stripes' standards, that is) of the group's originals this time around. (New York Sun)
Full Story from Daily Texan Jun 20, 2007
An entirely unexpected Patti Page cover, the surprisingly-epic-at-three-minutes "Conquest" recounts a sordid story of tangled sexual conquests. The vocals are appropriately overwrought and operatic for such a seedy tale, and the fanfares are paired with a trumpeter for a faux-mariachi sound. (U-Wire.com)
'Thump' it up Jun 17, 2007
The other oddity here is "Conquest," a slice of spaghetti-western kitsch sung by Patti Page in the 1950s and recast by the White Stripes as a deranged collision between speed-metal guitar and mariachi trumpet. Let's call it thrash-flamenco, and note that Jack's musical imagination is as sharp as it is skewed. (Boston Globe)
* Black, white and red all over Jun 11, 2007
Most surprising is a bombastic version of Conquest, a Patti Page song from the early 1950s, complete with mariachi horns. "I'd been wanting to cover that forever," Jack White said, "and the themes of this album seemed to keep pointing to this idea of role reversals and 'who's using who,' which are exactly the topics that song is about.". Among the stand-outs is You Belong to Me, recorded by Jo Stafford, Patsy Cline and Patti Page, among others.
