Merchant partners with the Pops and sounds better than ever May 29, 2008
With her woody quaver, Natalie Merchant found her medium while performing with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops at EdgeFest last night ... From the moment Natalie Merchant uttered the sweet opening stanza of "Autumn Lullaby," a traditional British text set to Merchant's own melody and sure-handed orchestration, it was glowingly, elegantly, poetically clear that the Boston Pops EdgeFest has finally found a match. Keith Lockhart will conduct the Pops in excerpts of Holst's "The Planets," after which former 10,000 Maniacs frontwoman Natalie Merchant will join the Pops to perform music from her upcoming solo album, as well as some tunes from her back catalog and even a musical version of a Shakespeare sonnet. In Planned Obsolescence, Natalie Merchant explores that conflict to a backing track as scintillating as a war fought with light sabres. A lot of rappers claim to "drop science" but no one does it with the aplomb of Blackalicious's Gift of Gab, who lives up to his name with a breathtaking array of verbal experiments with the elements. Nothing bites like reality May 8, 2008
I could see videos from such one-hit wonders as Joan Osborne and such adult-contemporary favorites as Natalie Merchant. The difference was obvious; MTV, like Trix, was for kids, but VH1 was for the mature music fan who wanted to revisit "The Big '80s" or experience an "Eight-Track Flashback." It was always a big deal when my brother and I could catch the same video on both MTV and VH1, and we'd change channels back and forth in sheer amazement. (Daily Iowan, IA)

The other selections on "Day By Day" vary from straight-up bossa nova ("Ha Dias") to swinging lounge jazz ("Nao Se Apavore"), from liquid funk ("Cidades") to a mellow alt-rock vibe not too far away from Sheryl Crow or Natalie Merchant. "Minha Flor" finishes the disc with what sounds like a somewhat stilted English translation of Portuguese lyrics, but she doesn't restrict herself to any genre, preferring to follow her instincts.
