Editor's notes: All this in our little corner of the world  Nov 21, 2008

17 Variations Concertantes of Felix Mendelssohn opened, a genially classical theme engendering storms of virtuosity - Prospero whipping up a theatrical squall to amuse his guests - before swirling off in a sparkling haze. Unfamiliar riches in a familiar room  Jul 27, 2008
Off the top of my head, there s the Mendelssohn Symphony No. 2 (Lobgesang), which I find quite beautiful even if its devotion to Beethoven s Ninth is plain; the two Prokofiev string quartets, the first of which I particularly like; the motets of Brahms (and his vocal music generally); the piano trio by Chopin. Numerous other examples could come to mind, but in the past couple days I ve been listening to unfamiliar works by none other than Beethoven and wondering why they don t get done. Joe Queenan: New classical music is torture  Jul 13, 2008
But they do this only because these works tend to be short and not terribly atonal; because they know this is the last time in their lives they'll have to listen to them; and because the orchestra has signed a contract in blood guaranteeing that if everyone holds their nose and eats their vegetables, they'll be rewarded with a great dollop of Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn. I started listening to classical music when I entered college, aged 17. (Guardian Unlimited -- Arts)

CAMBRIDGE - Not the least pleasure of the Back Bay Chorale's Friday performance of Felix Mendelssohn's "Elijah" was the match of repertoire and venue ... But the intimate Victorian grandeur and carved-wood warmth of Sanders Theatre were an architectural echo of Mendelssohn's sure-footed, unfailingly polished biblical epic ... Jolt In The Hall  Apr 3, 2008
Mozart and Mendelssohn will never sound quite the same again ... Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1, written as a vehicle for his own precocious keyboard prowess, is one of the great explosions of youthful showing off, a rapid-fire collection of irresistible tunes and lithe, clattery passagework ... In comparison to the Mendelssohn, this was a stately, mature reading, mixing dramatic but measured rhetoric with a certain emotional urgency that carried through the entire concerto. (San Francisco Chronicle -- Entertainment)

For Mendelssohn's Piano Quartet No.2 in F minor, Opus 2, the strings were joined by a chamber music player of enormous experience, violist Irina Morozova. The piece, written while Mendelssohn was in his early teens, radiates the brilliant facility of this composer's youthful work, although the performance had moments where the polish had not quite been buffed to its full sheen and there was a sense at interval that one hadn't yet heard truly great music. Music for lovers  Feb 15, 2008
Critics pick at the orchestration and long-windedness of both concerti, but these are works of genius, and for me they rank with the Mendelssohn Octet and the Bizet Symphony in C as among the greatest works anyone of such youth ever wrote.
