When Marshall Crenshaw was approached in May 2005 to write the title song for Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, he took the assignment seriously, even though the satirical film about a singer who overcomes adversity to become a musical legend had not yet been cast, or even greenlighted. A team of songwriters, including such luminaries as Van Dyke Parks and Marshall Crenshaw, provides the soundtrack, which punches above the usual musical-spoof weight, and Reilly's Roy Orbison-like croon is more than credible. Slapped together with more energy than care, Walk Hard falls short of the best examples of the musical parody genre, Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind, but Apatow proves again that he's in tune with moviegoers. (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)

Dewey Cox, Rock Legend  Dec 20, 2007
" The process of making "Walk Hard" was complicated by the fact that Dewey Cox needed a body of songs: songs that would be funny, of course, but would also sound good. And, as befitting the ridiculous notion that Cox had successfully gone through every 20th century musical cliche - the blues, the Elvis sound, the Roy Orbison crooner period, through to Dylan and psychedelia and even into punk - the songs needed a variety of songwriters. Kasdan, Reilly and a team of musicians (with help from... (San Francisco Chronicle -- Entertainment)

He shares credit on five of the songs, with the strongest the title tune, "Walk Hard," written with Marshall Crenshaw, Apatow and Kasdan. The songwriters, however, have a weakness for juvenile lyrics or, more accurately, pregnant pauses as with "In my dreams you're blowing me some kisses." You can guess where that line breaks. The songs are mostly simpler tunes, like "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and ones with choruses that lend well to a group of singing kids, like "Yellow Submarine." The adults are used only when they serve the song better than kids would, and it's all true to the spirit of the originals. (New York Post -- Entertainment)
