Allegory and imagery fill BSO work Jan 14, 2006
The piece takes its title and some substance from the opera ''Les Arts Florissants" (1685-6) by Marc-Antoine Charpentier that lent its name to one of today's leading early-music ensembles. Music depicting some of Charpentier's allegorical characters (Music, Poetry, Painting, and Architecture) is the basis, along with a scenario paralleling Charpentier's: The arts are under attack from Discord.Dawe's intricate contemporary overlay depicts three more centuries of attack; some things never change.... When in Rome, honour the greats Oct 15, 2005
After this came the beautifully judged and indisputable climax of the concert: a gorgeous Salve Regina by Marc-Antoine Charpentier and some thrilling excerpts from George Frideric Handel's setting of the psalm Laudate pueri Dominum. Charpentier was a Frenchman and Handel was a German. (Globe and Mail -- EntertainmentTP)
Don't composers know it's Christmas? Dec 21, 2004
Marc-Antoine Charpentier, a leading church composer during the reign of Louis XIV, wrote almost 500 sacred works, fewer than 10 of which are directly related to Christmas. The liturgical calendar was just too big, and Easter too important, to lavish much attention on the Nativity. (Globe and Mail -- EntertainmentTP)
Chorale concert delights at church: Mosaic Christmas' mixes old and new for the holidays Dec 5, 2004
The concert's first half-hour was devoted to "Messe de Minuit pour Noel" ("Midnight Mass for Christmas"), an often somber, sometimes majestic piece for which composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier (circa 1645-1704) followed his habit of borrowing secular melodies for sacred music. Backed by guest artist Ralph Valentine, tucked almost out of sight on the church's pipe organ amid the altar Christmas trees, and Molly McLaughlin and Nicole Hume on flute, the chorale made a big noise in a hushed room. Chorale plans to breathe new life into old carols Dec 2, 2004
MERIDEN In pairing the work of Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Stephen Paulus, Chorale Connecticut has created a "Mosaic Christmas" that Artistic Director Dorothy Barnhart hopes sounds new (even if the music isn't) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. "It's a great complement; each half is different," Barnhart says of the show, one of two annual concerts Chorale Connecticut usually produces. (Meriden Record Journal, CT)
