    Britney's back  Dec 3, 2008
The arrangement adds to the unsettling atmosphere: The keyboards sound like they were recorded underwater and a hi-hat chatters like a gossip columnist. "Who are you?/What'd we do?" Spears sings in a shell-shocked voice. (The Age, Australia)

Battle of the  Nov 13, 2008

Continuum offers up taste of Dutch treat  Nov 13, 2008
Linda Bouchard's Liquid States set up a wild rhythmic din from pieces of metal, including hi-hat, tam-tam and the wire-wound strings of the piano, which three members of the ensemble took turns striking directly with sticks and wire brushes. The piece had the gait if not the metre of a march, and a spirit of driven, antic fun that was signalled visually when clarinetist Max Christie played a few high blasts while rotating like a slow-moving top. Wii Music aims to take music gaming to the masses  Oct 21, 2008
As expected Wii Music also includes a variety of mini-games that let players create music videos, conduct an orchestra, play in a handbell choir, test their musical ears or rock out on a virtual drum set - Wii Fit owners can even use the Wii Balance Board accessory as virtual pedals for the bass drum and the hi-hat cymbal. But one of the big advantages that Wii Music has over its music game rivals is that the game doesn t require the purchase of any extra accessories. (Gizmag)

    RB2 Cymbals Hands-On  Sep 19, 2008
With the cymbals attached in freestyle mode, they take on individual tones of crash, ride, and hi-hat cymbals and the drum pads take on the role of toms and snare. For both particularly rhythmic and amateur users, the freestyle mode with the cymbals can be a ball. (IGN Gear)

    ION Drum Rocker Hands-On  Sep 13, 2008
One cymbal, if set to act as a second yellow pad, will serve as your hi-hat. Real drummers who play cross-handed will know instantly that playing the hi-hat to the right of the snare drum makes absolutely no sense (unless you're a lefty), and yet that's what Rock Band makes you do. (IGN Gear)

13 essential Keith Moon moments  Sep 6, 2008
As bassist John Entwistle recalled in Anyway Anyhow Anywhere: The Complete Chronicle of The Who 1958-1978, "We played Road Runner and he broke this drummer's bass drum pedal and mucked up the hi-hat. We thought, 'This is the fella.'". 1965 - Ushers in The Who's astonishing debut, My Generation, with the loose-limbed abandon of Out in The Streets, a performance that swings like his hero Gene Krupa without the refinement. What Rock Band Drums Won't Teach Yo...  Aug 23, 2008
The only exceptions are songs that are 16th-note beats, like "Orange Crush" and "Run to the Hills," where the red pad represents the hi-hat. The yellow pad most often represents the hi-hat, but also is used for the high tom in drum fills ... This can be confusing when moving to a real drum kit, as the hi-hat is generally to the left of the setup, meaning the drummer actually has to cross his right hand over his left - Rock Band doesn't replicate this. (Suite101.com)

Quick, let's do a wall of death  Aug 21, 2008
Byers reckons it's this tempo that's key to crowd behaviour: "Doubling the rhythm of the hi-hat, kick and snare drums has the effect of sending your heart rate soaring," he says. "Your body's rhythm is almost physically connected to the tempo of the drums.". (guardian.co.uk)

Remembering Isaac Hayes  Aug 12, 2008
Watch the embedded clip after the jump and notice how well the song fits the action, as Richard Roundtree emerges from the subway and strides through the gritty Times Square of 1971; the whole sequence is a masterpiece of coiled tension, propelled by the relentless patter of the hi-hat cymbals at the foundation of Hayes' track. More records followed (notably, 1971's Black Moses), but Hayes' interest soon turned to acting. (Entertainment Weekly)

    Cultural icon  Aug 11, 2008
With its pulsating hi-hat cymbals and funky wah-wah guitar, he created an urban soul-brother feel that transformed black music and paved the way for artists like Barry White and Millie Jackson. His shaven-headed, bling-laden, ghetto chic look made him a black cultural icon. (BBC News)

The left hand is the snare, and the right hand is the hi-hat symbol, or a snare if used with the B button. The A button or C button with the nuchuk are cymbals, will the d-pad hits the toms. Elvis Costello 101  May 24, 2008
New Lace Sleeves - A skittering hi-hat sets the tone for New Lace Sleeves, a soulful gem that makes the most of the Attractions rhythm section (bassist Bruce Thomas and drummer Pete Thomas nailing the groove). It also finds Costello at his most direct as a lyricist in the lead-off verse's darkly comic portrait of a one-night stand. (AZCentral -- Entertainment)

The Kills Midnight Boom  Mar 17, 2008
Last Day of Magic slides along on a cool-ass beat and a whispering backwards hi-hat, Mosshart sounding like Peaches at her most temptress, the Kills spitting out more and more erotic charge with every bar. While the fabulous Sour Cherry with its I m the only sour cherry on your fruit stand line and tongue-in-cheek swagger, seemingly exploits what sounds like the under-used rhythmic qualities of chopsticks. (PopMatters)

They're strong, distinctive movers and stompers, and the choreography by hip-hop veteran Hi-Hat finds surprising variations on basic, kinetic dance vocabulary derived largely from the South African "gumboot" tradition ... Directed by: Ian Iqbal Rashid; screenplay by Annmarie Morais; photographed by Andre Pienaar; edited by Susan Maggi; choreography by Hi-Hat; production design by Aiden Leroux; music by Andrew Lockington; produced by Jennifer Kawaja, Julia Sereny and Brent Barclay. (Chicago Tribune)

How She Move has own spin on dance movies  Jan 25, 2008
The thunderous, rhythmic choreography from longtime Missy Elliott collaborator Hi-Hat is pretty spectacular, though, and Rashid is confident enough to hold a shot and not ruin the dancing with unnecessary edits. Theres nothing slick or glamorous about How She Move despite the complexity of its step routines, the film itself is stripped down, gritty and almost arty. (MSNBC -- Movies)

Yoshi's new S.F. site wins accolades from both sides of the stage  Dec 1, 2007
They poured out bracing bop-rooted solos on tunes drawn primarily from Haynes' 2001 Charlie Parker tribute CD, "Birds of a Feather." They hit the ground swinging with a popping ride through Parker's "Diverse" and closed the first show with a crackling-fast take on Dizzy Gillespie's "Blue 'n' Boogie." In between came the rhapsodic Pat Metheny waltz "Question and Answer," with Payton and Garrett harmonizing the melody and riffing brilliantly off each other, and an intriguing version of "My Heart... He] interested me very much because he hardly used the hi-hat for the off-beat, and of course as a paraplegic I can't use hi-hats or bass drums. In the beginning ... in Montreal  Jul 25, 2007
Producer Hugh Padgham tells one of those stories in Sound On Sound magazine: "As Stewart and Sting really didn't want to be in the same room together, Sting would go skiing in the morning and Stewart would come in and say, 'Look, I want to add a hi-hat part. I'd think, 'Okay, well, he's the drummer,' so I'd record the hi-hat and then Sting would come in after lunch when Stewart was out skiing and he'd go, 'What's that f--king hi-hat part doing there? Get rid of it!' And he'd actually make me... (Montreal Gazette)

Musica Viva spans cultures to bid adieu  May 7, 2007
In the second movement, a rocking piano ostinato and an incongruous but convincing hi-hat and bongo tattoo drove a stomping, tail-chasing dance; in the third, a murky dirge became the foundation for further polyrhythmic jumbles, punctuated by raggedly thrilling choruses. Olly Wilson's thoroughly modernist Negro-spiritual deconstruction "A City Called Heaven" opened the evening, its second Boston-area performance of the year. (Boston Globe)

"We have a track record and we'll continue to run a tight ship." In an apparent reference to the failed Madhouse's fare, he said, "we do not serve $15 cheeseburgers or $14 martinis. Think of us as The Hi-Hat (a Providence dinner club with live music) without the high prices and more casual." Jazzmouth proves faint Aprils reputed cruelty  Apr 5, 2007
He eschews the hidebound doctrinaire approach of studied jazz drummers to whom the ride cymbal, hi-hat, bass and snare drum each has roles in playing that should not be modified. - Dave Simpson gets a drum lesson from Tony Allen  Mar 30, 2007
Quietly, he asks me to play the bass drum and the hi-hat pedal (the hi-hat is what produces the famous "fizz" sound on disco records) ... Finally, he gets me playing the hi-hat with sticks and feet, so my four limbs are powering the kit ... However, unlike his American heroes - the jazz greats Art Blakey, Max Roach and Elvin Jones - Nigerian drummers never used the hi-hat, which meant Allen could never learn. (Guardian Unlimited)

Dan Keyes is having the dime of his life  Feb 22, 2007
The songs Keyes wrote had guitars and drums, as always, but they were less mopey, with synth-beats recalling disco's persistent hi-hat cymbals. On his debut, "Young Love," beats tug back and forth with electric-guitar chords, with Keyes' happy high making love-and-party declarations such as "I want to be with you!" and "we'll find another way to dance!" The album is so effusive that some critics have called it ironic. (Newsday -- Entertainment)
