He was a popular fixture at many Proms, including, in 1985, the Last Night; an electrifying Belshazzar's Feast in 1986; the re-creation in 1994 of a Sixties Prom in tribute to Sir Malcolm Sargent (with the veteran pianist Moura Lympany); and the second night of the season in 1995, when he conducted the centenary performance of Elgar's Organ Sonata, orchestrated by Gordon Jacob. Entitled A Musical Journey to England, it featured works by under-appreciated early 20th century English composers York Bowen, Gordon Jacob, Granville Bantock, Cyril Scott and John Ireland. Concert and campus bands to play May 2, 2007
The Concert Band will perform six pieces, including three based on different English folk songs, including the "Giles Farnaby Suite" by Gordon Jacob and "Three Ayres from Gloucester" by Hugh M. Given the lingering fuss over the intrusions of reality TV, it's instructive to find out that Russell's approach to composers' lives - via the dramatic reconstruction of actual events - was deemed tasteless at the time.
