Sony home theater in a box delivers on features, value  Jun 13, 2007
Music tends to be more revealing of speaker quality, so we next checked out the One Night With Blue Note concert DVD. Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island" sounded decent; the pianist and trumpet player Freddie Hubbard came off best, but Tony Williams' drums sounded a little crude -- especially the cymbals, which were on the edge of sounding tizzy and harsh; easing back on the volume to a more moderate level helped matters. The limitations of the DAV-HDX500 were much more apparent when we played... (CNN -- Tech)

Except for the last two, each of the players came up in the era of hard bop, which ruled jazz from the mid-'50s through the '60s -- expressed in bands led by Art Blakey, Max Roach, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard and many more. This was music that, yes, evolved out of bebop, which had taken the guts of swing and Tin Pan Alley and supercharged them with whip-crack rhythm and high-wire twists and turns. By "accident" they had been sent a previously unknown and unaired tape of a 1958 Blakey concert - the only known footage of the drummer's legendary Messengers lineup with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Benny...
