Letters to Sunday Datebook Nov 17, 2008
Editor - Thank you for the wonderful article by Joshua Kosman on the life and work of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and the background on "Die Tote Stadt" (" 'Tote Stadt' Lives," Sept. 21). I am acquainted via e-mail with the composer's granddaughter, and forwarded the article to her, as well as to a friend who is a professional writing teacher and fellow Korngold enthusiast, and both of them thought the article was as wonderful as I did. Vancouverites feel a particular affinity with the former prodigy; it was our own Vancouver Symphony Orchestra that accompanied him on his Grammy-and-Juno-winning 2006 CD of violin concertos by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Samuel Barber, and William Walton. The love evidently flows both ways. (Georgia Straight)

'Oscar & Tony' makes a strong show of tradition Jan 7, 2008
The film music is firmly in the hyper-Romantic tradition founded by European immigrants such as Max Steiner and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The Broadway playlist either revisits the Golden Age or borrows from shows that themselves self-consciously do the revisiting. (Boston Globe)

Baritone Ayron Hyatt, 22, has chosen "Rivolgete a lui lo sguardo" from "Cosi fan tutte" by Mozart, "Hai gia vinta la causa" from Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro," "O vin, dissipe la tristesse" from "Hamlet" by Ambroise Thomas, "When the Air Sings of Summer" from "The Old Maid and the Thief" by Menotti, and "Pierrot's Tanzlied" from "Die tote Stadt" by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Composer noted for 'Hollywood Sound' Dec 28, 2007
But a half century after his death, mention of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, another great musical son of Vienna, often draws blank stares here and elsewhere - despite his legacy as the founder of the "Hollywood Sound.". But in a small way, this year has been Korngold's moment in a Vienna that is still recovering from the marathon musical and marketing excesses of the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth in 2006. Along with rousing Erich Wolfgang Korngold music they featured stirring performances as the Virgin Queen by Bette Davis, Warner's queen bee, and Flora Robson, the female superego of the British cinema. He was also a noted music teacher, counting among his students the 12-tone, groundbreaking composer Arnold Schoenberg (who would later become his brother-in-law) and Academy Award-winning film composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold. While a young man, Zemlinsky had a brief liaison with Viennese beauty Alma Schindler, and although they were inseparable for a while, she eventually threw him over to marry the much older Gustav Mahler, the first of her many famous husbands.
