He began writing arrangements in high school for local bands, and some of his arrangements were used by the Earl Hines band. Around 1942, Parker finally broke with McShann (there had been an aborted move to New York in 1939) and while working with the more acclaimed Earl Hines, Parker drew the attention of fellow future luminaries such as Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie. When poor timekeeping led to his being fired by Hines, Parker began a new venture with Gillespie, and rapidly found himself hailed as the founding voice of a new movement in jazz.
