But his greatest love may have been his adopted country, and the film he shot of it himself, as he traveled around -- including footage of Charlie Chaplin, car hops, Texas cattle and Lauren Bacall -- is the big present under this particular tree. Similarly, the Four Seasons Hotel New York is the I.M Pei-designed flagship of the global luxury chain, and celebrities from Charlie Chaplin to Elton John have famously wined and dined in the Beverly Hills Hotel and its Polo Lounge for nearly a century. These hotels' strong history in their locales is precisely what appealed to the Forbes Traveler board; the former was termed "a mecca for the executive visiting New York," while the latter was "still the place to see and be seen.". This week's DVD Report (October 12)  Oct 12, 2008
Whatever the occasion, Downey's astonishing work mimicking Charlie Chaplin is certainly worth revisiting. If only the film were as strong overall, and didn't rely on clunky expository devices to shuttle us from place to place in Chaplin's life: his hard-luck youth, his meteoric rise, his politics, his scandals and subsequent exile. (Boston Globe)

'Big Dig' evokes memories of Charlie Chaplin films  Oct 11, 2008

    In Cher's Pants  Sep 23, 2008
" The occasion for all this was the second night of taping a PBS special hosted by horn man Botti featuring all these artists. (On the first night, Josh Groban appeared; violinist Yo-Yo Ma was the second-night guest.) Related Column Archive It was certainly one of the wilder nights for Keith Lockhart s Boston Pops, not to mention Symphony Hall, where this reporter once worked. Wall-E's squeaky sound system  Sep 19, 2008
"We're kind of doing a Charlie Chaplin movie with music and sound effects and a lot of visual [effects], a lot of pantomime," he says. Most animated features are filled with wall-to-wall dialogue; you can kind of look away from the movie and probably still get the story.". (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

Pixar's new film Wall-E is the result of try, try, again  Sep 18, 2008
Stylistically, the film goes even further back for inspiration to the silent comedies of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Flying in the face of recent trends in animated cinema for knowing, witty, rapid-fire dialogue Wall-E hardly uses words at all. (Daily Telegraph)

Our terrible desire to rake through her remains  Sep 16, 2008
The magazine story cites a number of writers, each outdoing the other in order to explain who Monroe was after she died: She is deemed, variously, an angel, a "luminous" creature, and a genius, or spirit, of the order of Charlie Chaplin (whose Little Tramp is compared, by director Joshua Logan, to her "dumb blonde"). This is not at all uncommon: For almost half a century, artists and intellectuals have laboured to deify Monroe, or to explain, with excruciating patience, that she was a gifted... (Globe and Mail)

    Mister Lonley  Sep 15, 2008

Blah power: comic stars smell success on the net  Sep 11, 2008
"Right now it's an artist's medium because it can be done cheap and fast. It forces people to be creative. But there is not a lot of money to be made there just yet. In some ways, I think it's being viewed as the Wild West a little bit. If you can get there first, you can be Charlie Chaplin.". Kutcher's plans include the impending launch of a user-generated version of his hit MTV series Punk'd, which would allow users to perform pranks on their friends. The boat was built a century ago, at the then-enormous cost of 20,000 pounds, for Fred Karno, a music-hall impresario whose proteges included the young Charlie Chaplin. 'SVU's Chris Meloni is game to be 'Gym Teacher'  Sep 10, 2008
"Even as a child," says Meloni, rubbing his closecropped head thoughftully, "I was enamored with the physical comedians _ Charlie Chaplin, Jerry Lewis, the (Three) Stooges. You can dismiss it as slapstick, but their athleticism, their artistry, their ballet _ I've always been drawn to that. I could've gone that route.". Robert Downey Jr. Takes Inspiration From Father's Blaxploitation Flick For 'Tropic Thunder'  Aug 13, 2008
" In the end, it's somewhat fitting that Lazarus' voice came from memories of Downey's own youth, because everything old is new again for the actor, who was nominated for an Oscar in the early '90s (for his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin) but was sidetracked professionally by debilitating addictions for much of the next decade. Thanks to the double whammy of "Iron Man" and "Tropic Thunder," Downey once again finds himself high on the Hollywood food chain. But while he drew raves for his... (VHI.com -- Music News)

Globe writers on the one thing you must do, see, or hear this week  Aug 11, 2008
THE 1 SLAPSTICK SERIAL KILLERPossibly the strangest film Charlie Chaplin ever made, "Monsieur Verdoux" hit audiences like a poisoned pie in the face when it came out in 1947. It's a pitch-black comedy about a dapper little man who marries rich ladies and murders them, and it teeters breathlessly between farce and misogyny, especially when the riotously unkillable Martha Raye is involved. Evelyn Waugh has a mixed filmography  Jul 20, 2008
He visited both Charlie Chaplin and Walt Disney ("the two artists of the place") and generally marveled that, as he later put it, "no one in Hollywood considers the possibility of growing up." It was as if he moved among a citizenry of suntanned Sebastian Flytes. "MGM were consistently munificent," Waugh recorded in his diary, "and we left as we had come, in effortless luxury." An agreement would have brought him $140,000 (minus the not-inconsiderable expenses for his trip, of course). (Boston Globe)

Exiles on Indie Street  Jul 19, 2008
It's where Charlie Chaplin shot a two-reeler, Work, in 1915, and where Harold Lloyd made many of his silent comedies. By the late '40s it had become a seductively seedy location for the film noir crowd: Act of Violence, Hollow Triumph, Night Has a Thousand Eyes, Criss Cross, Douglas Sirk's Shockproof, Joseph Losey's remake of M and Kiss Me Deadly were all filmed there. (Time.com)

    Alistair Cooke...  Jul 18, 2008

    Culture Club  Jul 1, 2008
There was a time when you couldn t see a Charlie Chaplin movie in this country. Between his own pique at being kicked out of America - the government rescinded a re-entry permit after he went to London for the premiere of his film LImelight - and his ingrained habit of occasional reissues after a decade or so of withholding his old films for release, the better to build up public appetite, the only Chaplin films available for viewing were the early one and two-reelers, in reliably atrocious... Robots Have Feelings, Too  Jun 28, 2008
In terms of subject, it's not unlike the never-filmed screenplay that James Agee wrote for Charlie Chaplin in the 1950s, in which the Little Tramp is the last survivor of a nuclear blast. It's a mark of the Pixar team's artistry, which goes way beyond technical expertise, that within minutes of meeting WALL-E, a wordless, trash-compacting robot, we are persuaded to invest in him much of the feeling that we'd attach to a Chaplin character. (San Francisco Chronicle -- Entertainment)

Coldplay's NYC freebie worth the glitches  Jun 25, 2008
The closer was a rousing rendition of Lovers in Japan, a vigorous piano-led march from the new album that was accompanied by a blazing fast history of the 20th century in film clips projected on the overhead orbs: Houdini and Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler and faded Kodachrome education films about Japanese culture raced on by. There was a plaintive longing in the montage, as there is in much of Coldplay's music, to embrace the whole wide world in its lovely awfulness and awful loveliness. (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)

In response to Barbara Crawford s castigation of Corvallis school district for allowing Bill Clinton to speak on its property ( School district was wrong to host Clinton s speech, Letters, May 16), I take it that, to avoid any double standard, she would also have banned Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Dwight Eisenhower, Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gaugin, Charlie Chaplin and John F. A wonderful mess of blues  Apr 22, 2008
There's a riveting, harrowing quality to a lot of his compositions, but, then, something like the fun Maggie Campbell musically invokes an image of bumbling security guards chasing a scampering Charlie Chaplin through a piano factory. At 18 tracks, Ramblin' Son overstays its welcome some, but not enough to stop listeners from hearing Fauth as he fully realizes himself as a bright, modern performer of a history-steeped music.
