    Archives: Billy Bragg

Free for all  Dec 3, 2008
Unlike Billy Bragg, who asked Bebo founder Michael Birch to give artists a share of the company's sale price on the grounds that it has grown wealthy on the back of the music it serves, I don't see the social networks as "digital sharecroppers", to use Nick Carr's evocative phrase. But having my data locked up in Facebook and Flickr and Twitter and Dopplr and BrightKite creates an imbalance in the relationship, one that ends up distorting the free market in the interests of the service... 'The Works' mostly works  Aug 26, 2008
Unlike Billy Bragg and Wilco's "Mermaid Avenue" releases, which retained Guthrie's Dust Bowl folk essence, the lyrics are seemingly a base for Brooke's singer-songwriter pop. That perhaps explains why two of the songs ("Little Bird" and "Taste of Danger") are Brooke's own compositions, an inconsistency that bolsters the disc as a Brooke record, not a Guthrie one. Words of love - and lust  Apr 22, 2008
Midway through Billy Bragg's first record in six years, the short but stunning "Something Happened" poses two questions: "D'ya know what love is?" Bragg sings after a lovely plucked electric guitar motif morphs into a soaring, fuzzy rock jam. Then he asks more sadly, "D'ya know what lust is?" To the first he replies, "Love is when you willingly place someone else's priorities above your own." Plenty of U.K. artists over the years make that case, from the Jam to Billy Bragg to the Manic Street Preachers to even Blur, who didn't score a major pop hit in America until the decidedly unBlur-like "whoo hoo" of "Song 2."
