Hey Hollywood, instead of re-doing films that don't need to be redone, how about using your big brain and re-do films that had great promise and potential, but which were POORLY executed, like The Avengers and The Wild Wild West. Each of them could've conservatively been the premise for 2-3 very good subsequent films because of their time-tested appealing characters and interesting perspectives on spying, a genre that rarely gets boring IF done properly. Is it curtains for critics?  Jul 13, 2008
Back in 1999, the Jurassic age in web terms, Warner Brothers wanted to hold a test screening for the Will Smith movie Wild Wild West to build buzz on the net, but was so unsure of the film that it told the invited audience of online critics that they were going to watch The Matrix. The audience was furious and helped create the negativity around it that never dissipated. (Guardian Unlimited -- Arts)

Smith's Hancock top in the US  Jul 7, 2008
Given that Hancock is his fifth movie to open at No 1 over July 4, after Men in Blacks I and II, Independence Day and Wild Wild West, that's a pretty decent result. Hancock, the tale of an errant superhero who attempts to clean up his act, had received a distinctly lukewarm reaction from reviewers, but it seems that Smith is critic-proof. Considering the track record for Smith movies that have opened in July - "Independence Day," "Men in Black," "Wild Wild West," "Men in Black II" and "I, Robot" have collectively earned $1 billion - it's not surprising that Sony released "Hancock" leading into the Fourth of July weekend. Smith's interest in all aspects of the movie business comes as no surprise to Vince Gilligan, who wrote nearly 30 drafts of "Hancock" as it passed hands from directors Michael Mann, to Gabriele Muccino ("Pursuit... " Related Articles I just realized something. None of this matters. A critique of Hancock is an essay in irrelevance. It's Independence Day Week, and six times since 1996, that's meant a Will Smith movie a mega-giga-gigantic hit. Independence Day; Men in Black; Wild Wild West; Men in Black II; I, Robot: He shows up, people line up. Thomas Jefferson used to own this holiday, but now the former Fresh Prince does. The original show, created by gag maestros Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, began airing in 1965, in the midst of a spy-movie craze that had been launched by the first three Bond films.
