Harry's new friends & foes: Latest Potter movie adds several characters  Jul 11, 2007
In the film due in theaters tomorrow, she's played by Imelda Staunton -- the Oscar-nominated actress from "Vera Drake.". Kreacher, the house elf, is also new to the series. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, PA)

More of this story  Jul 11, 2007
I also craved much more of newcomers Evanna Lynch as the charmingly weird and ethereal Luna Lovegood and past Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake ) as Old Toad Face, aka Doloris Umbridge, Hogwarts new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. The two of them never fail to energize the picture, especially Staunton (outfitted in a succession of hideous pink suits), whose duplicitous character (really a spy sent to keep tabs on Dumbledore and Harry) believes deception (and physical abuse) is... A Middling 'Harry'  Jul 11, 2007
" But others, naive types stumbling in just hoping to see a movie that stands on its own, will find a long picture with a few pleasing moments, one standout performance and a lot of unnecessary plot loops. It all depends on the perspective: Taken as a motion picture, the new "Harry" comes up short. But taken as a visual aid to the experience of reading a book, the new "Harry" does its job. The picture benefits from the time-lapse photographic maturation of Daniel Radcliffe, who now has the... (San Francisco Chronicle)

    HAYWIRE Hogwarts  Jul 11, 2007
For the young folks, this ministerial interference manifests itself as a new and disapproved professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts, a teaching position with roughly the same tenure as a guest spot on C.S.I. There have been four predecessors, one for each movie, and the latest is Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton, Vera Drake). Wearing what appear to be hand-me-downs from the ghost of Jackie Onassis, she is the classic sweet-talking passive-aggressive tyrant. (National Post)

Review: Wild about Harry Potter No. 5  Jul 10, 2007
An Oscar nominee for her performance as a doomed British abortionist in Vera Drake, Staunton might earn another Academy nod for this very different yet equally satisfying performance. If so, shed be the first actor in the series to earn such recognition. (MSNBC -- News)

    Boy-wizard makes a stunning return  Jul 9, 2007
Staunton (Oscar-nominated for her performance in 2004's Vera Drake) does such a great job stealing scenes in Phoenix it becomes hard to tell which is scarier the merciless, all-powerful, soul-destroying evil wizard or the smiling, softly spoken bureaucrat who insists that everything be done by the book. Both these satanic forces impel Harry to rebel. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

Harry Potteron the big screen  Jul 7, 2007
The series has always featured A-list British actors of stage and screen and Staunton (Oscar nominee for Vera Drake) is a great addition, slyly evil as the pink-suited edict-slinging instructor intent on taking over Hogwarts School from headmaster Dumbledore. The first real villainess in the series, she is a delicious new impediment to Harry and his fellow sorcerors-in-training. (The Palm Beach Post)

    Harry Potter's witchy woman  Jul 7, 2007
includes "Vera Drake," for which she received an Oscar nomination, and "Shakespeare in Love," Staunton, 51, first heard about Umbridge from a friend who sped through the 2003 book and immediately thought of Staunton for Hogwarts' newest arrival. Dispatched to the wizarding school by the Ministry of Magic to micromanage headmaster Albus Dumbledore and tamp down rumors of evil Lord Voldemort's ascendancy, Umbridge is compared to a "large, pale toad," with a broad, flabby face, little neck and a... Potter flicks made to order  Jun 22, 2007
Harry s worst nemesis yet is new Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor Dolores Umbrage, played with vinegary passive-aggressive finesse by Oscar-nominee Imelda Staunton ( Vera Drake ). Dressed in bright pink, Umbrage cheerfully resorts to physically torturing her students whenever it suits her nefarious purposes. (Boston Herald)

Studios choose to play it safe  Jun 17, 2007
Much rarer are those movies like "Vera Drake " (2004) that realistically portray the emotional turmoil and hard decisions women actually experience (let alone acknowledge that they may have made the right choice). Ironically, one of the more honest accounts can be found in a teen comedy: 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High ," in which the freshman played by Jennifer Jason Leigh gets knocked up by a sleazeball (Robert Romanus ) who won't pay for half the abortion or even drive her to the clinic. 'The Last Hangman' is grim but humane  Jun 16, 2007
The movie, a gr ay and measured biography of Albert Pierrepoint , who worked until his 1956 retirement as chief executioner for Her Majesty's government, is grim stuff and very much a bookend to "Vera Drake " in its mixture of post war British reserve and ugly reality. Spall makes it work, creating a little man with big and terrible secrets. (Boston Globe -- Living)

Around the World in a Thousand Words  May 30, 2007
Brilliant as it is, Mungiu's film is likely to be a hard sell: It's a movie about abortion that makes Vera Drake look like Mary Poppins. At the opposite extreme, the epitome of globo-absurdity in Cannes is French director Olivier Assayas's meta-trashy Boarding Gate, which winds up with sullen Ser, hit woman, and festival It-girl Asia Argento wandering drugged through the back alleys and karaoke clubs of mysterious Hong Kong.
