His strong, slightly gravelly voice was featured on trailers for thousands of films, including "The Godfather," "Fatal Attraction" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." For a time in the late '70s, LaFontaine was the official voice of Paramount Pictures. His favorite work was one he did for the 1980 film "The Elephant Man," he said in interviews, but whether the film was Oscar-caliber or a bomb waiting to blow, he handled every assignment equally. Once upon a time, the summer movie season was filled with variety, and the big Event Movies were exciting not just because they were an adaptation, but because they were innovative and original (see Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, and Independence Day ). Now, Nashawaty argues, the studios are content to trot out whatever comic book adaptation is currently at the top of their to-do list, a list that gets longer with each successful comic book movie; which is all of them.
