At their best - in Shallow Hal or Kingpin, say - they show a rare ability to mix the nasty and the nice, to combine humor based in the grossness of the body and its functions with a sweet, humanistic spirit. But that generosity seems to have abandoned them here. (Taipei Times, Taiwan -- World)

"The Heartbreak Kid" fails all expectations  Oct 10, 2007
" A movie like "Shallow Hal" makes you believe that people are good deep down inside. "The Heartbreak Kid" has the opposite effect. Even if you ignore all the negativity you will realize this is not a very funny film. This movie has many fewer laughs per minute than "Dumb and Dumber" and "There's Something About Mary. " The Farrelly brothers were at the top of their game 10 years ago. The originality they displayed in the 90s is gone. They created their own form of wacky comedy and it seems like... October 3, 2007 - The Farrelly brothers have created more than their share of memorable female roles in films from There's Something About Mary to Shallow Hal, but in The Heartbreak Kid, they offer the best of both worlds - both the dream girl and the nightmare. For the first time since "There's Something About Mary," Stiller is reunited with directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly ("Dumb r," "Shallow Hal" and "Fever Pitch"), and the trio picks up right where it left off. (GW Hatchet, Washington DC)

Why the Farrelly Brothers are back to gross-out  Oct 4, 2007
They were regularly accused of insensitivity to minorities they laughed at schizophrenia in Me Myself and Irene (2000) and at obesity in Shallow Hal (2001). More importantly they were often said to be responsible for the dumbing down of popular culture (indeed the phrase dumbing down was coined after Dumb and Dumber). (Times Online)

NW: Is it misogynistic for men to play women?  Jul 17, 2007
Even fat activists complain when actors don fat suits for laughs, as Gwyneth Paltrow found out when she artificially bulked up for "Shallow Hal." So it would seem logical that drag today, especially when the man playing the part is straight, is both misogynistic (notice how the "women" in these movies are always awkward and ugly) and homophobic (notice how they also flutter and flounce like a stereotypical gay man). So why is it still OK for male actors to wear dresses. (MSNBC -- Movies)

    Murphy's `Norbit' is one bad joke  Feb 11, 2007
The Farrelly brothers poked fun at fat people in ``Shallow Hal,'' and that bordered on the offensive, but it was clear they were even more interested in making fun of the people who make fun of fat people. When Murphy plays Sherman Klump in his ``Nutty Professor'' movies, Sherman is sweet, kind, smart, and yes, fat. (San Jose Mercury News)

    Norbit *½  Feb 9, 2007
More dimpled and roly-poly than Eddie Murphy's Klump characters from his two Nutty Professor movies, more than Gwyneth Paltrow in Shallow Hal or Martin Lawrence in Big Momma, Eddie Murphy's new Rasputia is the reigning queen of simulated adiposity. Otherwise, Norbit is pretty much a bad-taste sinkhole, with Murphy competing against himself to see which of his three characters he can make more grating. (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)
