The sprawling series, which aired in weekly hourlong episodes on ABC, follows Indy on his adventures around the globe, first as a young child (Corey Carrier), then as a teenage soldier and spy during World War I (Sean Patrick Flanery), and later as a college student. Each episode sends Indy on a sort of extreme field trip, where he meets great figures and witnesses seismic eventslike Zelig without the neurosis, or "Forrest Gump with a whip," as Lucas has put it. Taking up the mantle from River Phoenix were actors Sean Patrick Flanery, to play Indy as a young man, and Corey Carrier to play Indy as a boy. While the movie trilogy used history mainly as a backdrop for the adventures, Lucas wanted to use his television show to really explore the historical setting and to educate as much as entertain. Interestingly, the 1999 "Star Wars" installment "The Phantom Menace" and "Young Indy" also share a fundamental miscalculation: the movie foolishly centered on a child, 10-year-old Anakin Skywalker, as did half the "Young Indy" episodes, which were largely forgettable compared with those starring Sean Patrick Flanery as the character from age 16 to 20. Lucas has clearly earned the right to do as he wishes, including his stated plan to produce 100 episodes of the animated series and only then shop... (Variety)
