Review: 'Tudors': Henry sheds frat boy crown  Mar 29, 2008
The religious angle is kept keen in Season 2 even without Wolsey (played by Sam Neill in Season 1), because Jeremy Northam, as Sir Thomas More, spearheads the movement to keep Henry accountable to God, not the clergy accountable to Henry. It's a nice counterbalance to the lustful pursuit of Anne Boleyn. (San Francisco Chronicle)

    A right royal romp  Mar 28, 2008
Sam Neill, as filthy Cardinal Wolsey, looks like the cat that ate a virgin, which is very effective, and Natalie Dormer's Anne Boleyn is convincingly cunning and winsome. Queen Catherine (Maria Doyle Kennedy) is believable but Henry, complete with gorgeous razor-sharp haircut, cannot act, at all. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

Henry rocks, heads roll on richer, lustier 'Tudors'  Mar 28, 2008
In the supporting cast, we've lost Sam Neill and will soon lose Jeremy Northam, whose Sir Thomas More is about to meet his saintly fate. In exchange, though, we gain the fabulous Peter O'Toole as a droll Pope Paul III. Questions come easy to king of the box  Mar 24, 2008
Or you get someone like Sam Neill, who's wonderfully, painfully shy, who I actually sat with for about 20 minutes before the interview just to begin to relax him with the idea that we might talk. Once we got going he was fine but it was clear - and he made it clear, even though he wasn't trying to be difficult - that it wasn't his idea of an easy experience. Behead Showtime's Tudors  Mar 31, 2007
The high points, which make "The Tudors" watchable, include Sam Neill as the scheming Cardinal Wolsey; Gabrielle Anwar as Henry's scheming sister, Princess Margaret, and Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn, the scheming woman destined to become another of his six wives. Neill brings gravity to "The Tudors" and Anwar brings electricity; Dormer is bewitching enough, in demeanor as much as beauty, for us to accept her as a woman whose temptations could alter the course of history. Henry VIII: portrait of a serial schemer  Mar 31, 2007
All youthful aggression and ill-advised delegating (to Cardinal Wolsey, played by Sam Neill), he's got an eye for the ladies -- many ladies -- while shrinking from his marriage to Queen Catherine (Maria Doyle Kennedy), who was previously married to his older brother. With all the intrigue of a Shakespearean drama and all the coiled intensity of youthful power-brokering and rampant sexuality, it's hard to not like this version of Henry VIII.. Stellar cast of Tudor court  Mar 31, 2007
The crafty Cardinal Wolsey (Sam Neill) persuades Henry not to go to war with France, but no one comes between the King and his playtime. With his torso-hugging wardrobe and alpha-male energy, this King Henry is volatile, vibrant and voraciously sensual. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Soapy 'Tudors' is all surface  Mar 30, 2007
The political oscillations are given an entertaining tweak by Sam Neill as the nefarious Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. Wolsey manipulates Henry like a puppet in his power play to become pope, humoring the childish king like an ambitious record-label producer might treat "the talent." Neill clearly relishes the role of a transparent opportunist on the order of J.R. Ewing, and he also manages to evoke pathos as Wolsey's star begins to fall. (Boston Globe -- Living)

But her failure to produce a male heir has endangered her hold on her husband, and her links to Spain have brought her into conflict with the king's powerful Francophile Lord Chancellor, Cardinal Wolsey (Sam Neill, in one of his best recent performances).
