The Oscars had a strong foreign accent this year Feb 28, 2008
The last foreign sweep, in 1965, went to three Brits and a Russian: Rex Harrison (My Fair Lady), Peter Ustinov (Topkapi), Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins) and Lila Kedrova (Zorba the Greek). Before Cotillard, only two foreign-born actors had won Oscars for non-English performances: Sophia Loren (in 1961 for Two Women) and Roberto Benigni (in 1998 for Life Is Beautiful). The only other time in the Oscars' 80-year history that all four acting winners were foreign-born was 1964, when the recipients were Rex Harrison, Julie Andrews, Peter Ustinov and Lila Kedrova. As a raging, conniving, acquisitive petroleum pioneer caught up in California's oil boom of the early 20th century, Day-Lewis won for a part that could scarcely have been more different from his understated role as a writer with severe cerebral palsy in 1989's ``My Left Foot. " You can't build a book like this without interviews, and Harris seems to have talked to virtually everyone who's still around, and to great effect. He displays a diplomatic sense of the imprecision of memories, which allows him to deftly negotiate competing accounts, and he often performs the sleight of hand of dishing while appearing to maintain his neutrality. We're informed that a soused Rex Harrison "appalled" a roomful of Hollywood establishment types at a restaurant by "singing obscene... (International Herald Tribune -- Arts)
This 'Fair Lady' is easy to love Feb 8, 2008
As Professor Higgins, Christopher Cazenove has more trouble escaping from the shadow of Rex Harrison than O'Hare does with Audrey Hepburn's (though she does bear a striking resemblance to the movie star from some angles). Cazenove's professor too often blusters and booms when he should stay above the fray; Higgins may be full of hot air, but he shouldn't look this hot under the collar. (Boston Globe)
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT Jan 30, 2008
A great example of a self-fulfilling prophecy came in the movie "My Fair Lady." Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) is talking to a friend on a London street, and he's bragging to him about his ability to influence and change the behavior of other people and he points to Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) and says, "Do you see the dirty flower girl, I could take that gutter snipe and within six months, change her into a princess. She will be dancing with the prince at the ball." He persuades... (SunOnline)

Sweeney Todd - the Sunday Times review Jan 27, 2008
Well, perhaps I m biased, being a hopeless singer whose idol in movie musicals is Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady, but I didn t mind the vocal shortcomings. Songs in movies are never as compelling as they can be live, and when, as here, they aren t accompanied by much movement from the actors, they have the potential to drain the life out of a film as surely as a cameo by Quentin Tarantino. (Times Online)
Stars: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter Jan 26, 2008
The answer, of course, is that they sing perfectly well (though Depp does a few too many bars of Rex Harrison style talky-singing). But the great communal sigh of relief and the subsequent adulation that has followed this revelation have somehow obscured the fact that Sweeney is only a minor work visually ravishing, and buoyed by Sondheim s sweet lyrical ;lan but certainly not Burton at his best. Movie musicals rule again Jan 24, 2008

Other leading acting centenarians include such diverse talents as the suave Rex Harrison, tempestuous Anna Magnani and Mr. Television himself, Milton Berle, who jump-started the new medium with the talents he'd honed in vaudeville. Berle and his many former fellow headliners had outlived the golden age of vaudeville by the time they established the small-screen patterns for variety shows and sketch comedy (not to mention many of the same jokes) that endure to this day. The role of Higgins has, since Howard played him in the film, been one of suave, debonair, careless charm - a pattern effortlessly assumed by Rex Harrison in the musical. Certainly not for the team of Lerner and Loewe, who perfected the practice for Rex Harrison in "My Fair Lady" and Richard Burton in "Camelot.".
