She has played Mrs. Lovett opposite Len Cariou, George Hearn and David Cryer in various productions beginning as far back as 1980, and took over for Patti Lupone when she left the final five weeks of the 2006 Broadway production. Hess, who was a standby for Sweeney Todd and Judge Turpin for the Broadway show, admits with a laugh, "I think the whole thing is very bizarre for a musical frankly. I think it was pretty courageous of Stephen Sondheim to say, 'Okay, I'm going to sit down and write a... (Los Angeles Downtown News, CA)

Mama Rose Cleans Up  Mar 7, 2008
March 7, 2008 -- PATTI LuPone didn't miss a beat during Wednesday night's preview of "Gypsy" when the curtain rising for the second act knocked a bulb from the giant "Rose" sign high in the rafters, littering the St. James stage with glass. Staying in character as unflappable Mama Rose, LuPone grabbed an offstage broom and swept up the mess. (New York Post -- Gossip)

They're Glad To Have Met John Doyle  Mar 3, 2008
Lucky, indeed - "Sweeney Todd," starring a tuba-toting Patti LuPone, netted him a Tony. Heady stuff for someone who, until four years ago, was directing shows in a 216-seat theater in the English countryside. (New York Post -- Entertainment)

Encores! strikes up the band  Feb 9, 2008
The July 2007 staging of "Gypsy," toplined by Patti LuPone, came on the heels of a glowingly received production of Stephen Sondheim's "Follies," which kept Broadway abuzz with transfer chatter -- although that stint on the main stem never materialized. Last year's spring season also included Irving Berlin Hart's 1932 "Face the Music," and "Stairway to Paradise," an original compilation of Broadway revue numbers that starred Kristin Chenoweth. * Murder most musical  Jan 18, 2008
It seemed a lot less funny in the recent revival, which starred Michael Cerveris and Patti Lupone in roles originated on Broadway by Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury in 1979. Burton's film, in spite of the participation of Sacha Baron Cohen (as a mountebank barber in a skin-tight costume) and Timothy Spall (as a louche bailiff) pretty much casts out frivolity altogether. 'Celebrity Rehab' is sobriety as career move  Jan 10, 2008
At this moment in this kooky, crazy, mixed-up thing we call pop culture, the notion of building a Hollywood career out of rehab - going in and out of recovery like Patti LuPone does Broadway shows - is not completely Swiftian, or Chayefskian, or Onionian. And so tonight at 10, VH1 fills the market gap with a new reality show called "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew." On it, an assembly of lower-echelon performers de tox together at the Pasadena Recovery Center under Dr. Drew Pinsky, radio host and,... (Boston Globe)
