Had Aamir Khan not stepped into the scene with his Patch Adams act and batted all the way for young Ishaan, the movie might not have become the stupendous boxoffice success it did. Hoffman, Linney ennoble The Savages  Nov 28, 2007
In fact, both Hoffman and Linney are spot-on throughout, as is Bosco, reminding us yet again that even in vehicles that dont deserve them (say, Patch Adams and The Nanny Diaries, respectively), they always nail the character theyre portraying. Its kind of a bummer, then, that Jenkins cops out a bit at the end, tying up things a little too neatly for characters who have been so wonderfully ragged around the edges. (MSNBC -- Movies)

Huge bills; 'Almighty' payout?  Jun 22, 2007
Sure, the man who gave us Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Patch Adams made do with such simple pleasures as a flying "butt monkey" and miraculously enlarged breasts in the first Almighty, in which Jim Carrey's TV reporter is visited by Morgan Freeman's divine being and told to fill in for a while. But for Evan Almighty, a more family-oriented PG follow-up about a modern-day Noah played by Steve Carell that opens today, Shadyac was thinking big. (USA Today)

'Evan' Can Wait  Jun 20, 2007
Shadyac, who early on made Ace Ventura, now fancies himself some kind of big-screen preacher a maker of do-good, be-good, feel-good films, chief among them the sickly sweet Patch Adams and now this. Bruce Almighty wasn't much fun either, but at least it felt a little more honest and found room between the sermons for some naughty-boy ogling and potty-mouth humor. (City Pages)

New on DVD: 'Good Shepherd,' 'Volver'  Apr 7, 2007
This story of single dad Chris Gardner, whose prodigious real-life economic struggle was rewarded by about $164 million in North American box office, pours on the sentiment and manipulation more than any movie since 1998's Patch Adams. Though at least this time, you don't want to deck the hero. (USA Today -- Life)

Actors, outside the box  Mar 28, 2007
Granted, movie history is littered with the fallout from decisions like the move to green-light "Patch Adams"; few things compel one to avert the eyes like Robin Williams doing a running leap into a tub of overheated pathos. On the other hand, the impulse of comic actors to try drama sometimes results in felicitous surprises, such as Sandler's performance in "Punch-Drunk Love," which made excellent, unsettling use of his mentally unstable man-child persona by taking it out of the unreal context... There are bitterly divided rival schools of medical clowning: The "Patch Adams" approach focuses more on entertaining patients; the "Theodora" school, embraced by the clowns in the Haifa program, views clowns more as an adjunct to doctors and nurses.
