Despite the lamb's charm and a first-rate cast highlighted by Willis and Pamela Reed, director Peter DuBois' staging wears thin over the course of 2 1/2 hours. Written in '78, a year before Shepard's Pulitzer-winning "Buried Child" premiered at the Magic Theatre (where he was playwright in residence), "Curse" contains the strikingly drawn characters, sharply comic dialogue and rich poetic flights typical of Shepard's gritty family dramas of the period ("Child," "True West").
