Chaotic times call for superheroes over spies Jun 29, 2008
"Dr. No," the first Bond film, kicked off a craze that would include the Matt Helm series, featuring Dean Martin; the "Our Man Flint" films, with James Coburn; the Palmer series; and such one-offs as "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold" and "A Dandy in Aspic.". On television there were both British imports ("The Avengers," "Secret Agent") and such homegrown shows as "I Spy," "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," and "The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.," as well as "Mission: Impossible" and "Get Smart" (parody always... I Spy a Progressive Racial Fantasy Jun 5, 2008
The Cold War entertainment complex was chugging along at full thrust then, with everything from the dry ice of John Le Carr novels to the fluorescent buffoonery of James Coburn's Our Man Flint delightfully exploiting anxieties about the Soviet threat. But the singular brilliancy of I Spy was its way of deepening escapist fantasy by sketching both the red star of communism and the color line in America. (Slate)

Biederman says he's still adding to his collection (check your attics; he's hunting for the Cone of Silence from "Get Smart" and the wristwatch from "Our Man Flint," among other things) and hopes to eventually find a permanent home for his treasures. "If someone wanted to write me a really big check and it would have to be a really big check I still don't know if I'd take it," says Biederman, who has already rejected one offer from the Smithsonian Institution. The CIA on film: Youre not reading this Dec 22, 2006
Bonds success led to a massive influx of on-screen spy organizations ICE for Matt Helm, ZOWIE for Our Man Flint, IMF for Mission: Impossible, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. but not for the CIA. Agency heroes were relegated to B-flicks, like 1965s awful Operation C.I.A., starring a young Burt Reynolds let loose in Saigon, where, apparently, they speak Thai. Click for related content. Rewind: Silly Alex Rider — Espionage Is For Grown-Ups Oct 10, 2006

Who stole Andy Roddick's 'mojo?' Jul 20, 2006
But as a kid growing up, I loved the James Bond series, the "Our Man Flint" movies starring James Coburn and I even enjoyed Dean Martin starring as Matt Helm in "Murderer's Row" and "The Silencers.". Each set of movies featured the latest and greatest technology and it was fun seeing our heroes killing the bad guys. (Marco Island Sun-Times, FL)
