Whether he's playing comic relief (Galaxy Quest), a villain (The Green Mile, Charlie's Angels) a sidekick (Matchstick Men) or unpredictable leading man (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) - or even a two-headed president (The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy) - you just never know where he's going to take you. What other director could have made Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, Hannibal and Matchstick Men. Scott, who also paints, knows his art. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

    Movie Review  Nov 13, 2007
Scott knows how to make an interesting and entertaining film ("Gladiator," "Matchstick Men"), but his punches miss with "Gangster." The film is visually interesting, but the concept seems to rely too much on realism. If you want to watch a dry, naturalistic representation of crime in the '70s, "American Gangster" might be enough of a diversion. (University News, MO)

American Gangster recalls the late 60's drug trade  Nov 3, 2007
Not since Thelma and Louise (1991) has Scott successfully gotten to the heart of his characters (with the exception of the underappreciated Matchstick Men), and here he fails to give us anyone to care about. Although Washington makes his character likeable, there's no mistaking that Lucas is a murderous, dope-smuggling war profiteer who deserves to fall. (Hillsdale Independent, NY)

Brad Cairn (Sam Rockwell, of the underrated "Matchstick Men" and "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind") and his wife, Abby (Vera Farmiga, of "The Departed"), are a wealthy New York couple living in a luxe apartment overlooking Central Park. Their little boy, Joshua (movie first-timer Jacob Kogan), seems like a model kid: polite, brainy, plays the piano. (VHI.com -- Music News)

'Breach': Souled Out, By Kurt Loder  Feb 17, 2007
") And while he doesn't drink, he does like to suck up jellybeans out of a martini glass. These arbitrary quirks don't rise to the level of funny even if you stack them on top of one another, which the movie does. And Johnny's offbeat superpower he turns into a skeleton and erupts in flames whenever there's evil around is so haplessly computer-generated, it's little more than a cartoon. Why does a skilful actor like Cage, so memorable in underrated films like "Matchstick Men" and "The Weather... (MTV.com)

'Breach': Souled Out, By Kurt Loder  Feb 17, 2007
Why does a skilful actor like Cage, so memorable in underrated films like "Matchstick Men" and "The Weather Man," lower himself to appear in pop junk like "Ghost Rider". The director appears to have no facility for guiding actors, and so Cage is reduced to horror-face bellowing in some scenes, and in others to croaking out lines like "I am speaking to the fire element within me." He's also been burdened with a ratty black hairpiece that sits on his head like a crow on a phone pole. (VHI.com -- Music News)
